Epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) is one of the most severe clinical manifestations of human adenovirus ocular surface infection, which may lead to the formation of subepithelial infiltrates (SEIs) in the anterior corneal stroma in 20-50 % of cases. SEIs may be asymptomatic or give rise to corneal aberrations and visual impairment for months or years after acute infection, despite treatments. Here, we describe the ultrastructural and immunophenotypic features of the anterior corneal stroma of a patient who underwent superficial anterior lamellar keratoplasty (SALK) surgery to remove corneal opacities related to clinically significant and steroid-unresponsive, long-lasting SEIs after adenoviral EKC.

Phoronida is a small group of marine animals, most of which are characterized by a long larval period and complex metamorphosis. As a result of metamorphosis, their body changes so much that their true anterior and posterior ends are very close to each other, and the intestine becomes long and U-shaped. Using histology and electron microscopy, we have shown that the elongation and change in shape of the digestive tract that occurs during metamorphosis in Phoronopsis harmeri larvae is accompanied by the formation of new parts and changes in ultrastructure.

The mammalian olfactory system is responsible for processing environmental chemical stimuli and comprises several structures, including the olfactory epithelium, olfactory bulb, olfactory peduncle (OP), and olfactory cortices. Despite the critical role played by the OP in the conduction of olfactory information, it has remained understudied. In this work, optical, confocal, and electron microscopy were employed to examine the anatomy, histology, and ultrastructure of six human OP specimens (ages 37-84 years).

Purpose: To investigate potential modes of programmed cell death in the lens epithelial cells (LECs) of patients with early age-related cortical cataract (ARCC) and to explore early-stage intervention strategies.
Methods: Anterior lens capsules were collected from early ARCC patients for comprehensive analysis. Ultrastructural examination of LECs was performed using transmission electron microscopy.

This study aimed to investigate the macroscopic, light microscopic (LM) and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) characteristics of the pecten oculi in common kestrels (Falco tinnunculus). A total of six eyeballs from three common kestrels were used as the study material. The examination revealed that the bulbus oculi was spherical in shape and its diameter exceeded the axial-global length.
