Recent advances of PIWI-interacting RNA in cardiovascular diseases.

Clin Transl Med

August 2024

Key Laboratory of Maternal & Fetal Medicine of National Health Commission of China, Shandong Provincial Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital affiliated to Qingdao University, Jinan, Shandong, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The study of noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs), particularly PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA), in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) is an emerging area of research, with piRNA recognized for its role in maintaining genome stability and influencing various disease processes.
  • Recent findings suggest piRNA is involved in key cardiovascular events and may serve as a promising biomarker or therapeutic target for CVDs.
  • The review highlights piRNA's regulatory influence on apoptosis, inflammation, and angiogenesis, while also addressing challenges in understanding its nomenclature and functions beyond its interactions with PIWI proteins.

Thermostable Bacterial Collagenolytic Proteases: A Review.

J Microbiol Biotechnol

July 2024

College of Life Sciences and Technology, Longdong University, Qingyang 745000, P.R. China.

Collagenolytic proteases are widely used in the food, medical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and textile industries. Mesophilic collagenases exhibit collagenolytic activity under physiological conditions, but have limitations in efficiently degrading collagen-rich wastes, such as collagen from fish scales, at high temperatures due to their poor thermostability. Bacterial collagenolytic proteases are members of various proteinase families, including the bacterial collagenolytic metalloproteinase M9 and the bacterial collagenolytic serine proteinase families S1, S8, and S53.

Enumeration, Nomenclature, and Stability Rules of Carbon Nanobelts.

J Chem Inf Model

February 2024

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, Jiangsu 225002, China.

With recent breakthroughs and advances in synthetic chemistry, carbon nanobelts (CNBs) have become an emerging hot topic in chemistry and materials science. Owing to their unique molecular structures, CNBs have intriguing properties with applications in synthetic materials, host-guest chemistry, optoelectronics, and so on. Although a considerable number of CNBs with diverse forms have been synthesized, no systematic nomenclature is available yet for this important family of macrocycles.

Evolution End Classification of Gene Clusters Mediating Bacterial Degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D).

Int J Mol Sci

September 2023

Ufa Institute of Biology, Ufa Federal Research Centre, Russian Academy of Sciences, Prospekt Oktyabrya, 69, 450054 Ufa, Russia.

The ( and ) are gene clusters originally discovered in plasmid pJP4 which are involved in the bacterial degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) via the ortho-cleavage pathway of chlorinated catechols. They share this activity, with respect to substituted catechols, with clusters and . Although great effort has been devoted over nearly forty years to exploring the structural diversity of these clusters, their evolution has been poorly resolved to date, and their classification is clearly obsolete.

Half a century of systematic research on heat-induced colour changes in bone - A review.

Sci Justice

September 2023

University of Coimbra, Centre for Functional Ecology, Laboratory of Forensic Anthropology, Department of Life Sciences, Calçada Martim de Freitas, 3000-456 Coimbra, Portugal; Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, 3000-456 Coimbra, Portugal.

Skeletal human remains presenting heat-induced changes have been a focus of study for a long time. However, there is still a long way to go for the anthropologists to be able to fully interpret and understand these changes. Heat-induced colour modifications are one of the least understood phenomena in bone, displaying a variety of exceptions (e.
