To Cut (Minimally Invasively) Is to Cure: Robotic Lobectomy for Pulmonary Mucormycosis.

Ann Thorac Surg Short Rep

December 2024

Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, Alabama.

Pulmonary mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive and highly morbid disease commonly found in immunosuppressed patients. Rapid diagnosis and treatment are essential, with thoracotomy and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery techniques previously described for surgical resection of infected lobes. Here we present the case of a patient with acute myeloid leukemia and nonresolving pneumonia treated with robotic left upper lobectomy.

Background: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem-cell transplantation is the only curative treatment for myelofibrosis. Driver mutations are the pathophysiological hallmark of the disease, but the role of mutation clearance after transplantation is unclear.

Methods: We used highly sensitive polymerase-chain-reaction technology to analyze the dynamics of driver mutations in peripheral-blood samples from 324 patients with myelofibrosis (73% with mutations, 23% with mutations, and 4% with mutations) who were undergoing transplantation after reduced-intensity conditioning.

A Patient With NEMO Deficiency, Disseminated M. szulgai, and Post-HSCT Inflammatory Disease.

Pediatr Transplant

February 2025

Division of Stem Cell Transplantation and Regenerative Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, California, USA.

Background: Disseminated mycobacterium poses a significant risk for patients with NEMO deficiency. Hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) corrects the NEMO defect in hematopoietic cells thus treating the immunodeficiency.

Methods: We present a patient with NEMO deficiency who successfully underwent HSCT despite a disseminated Mycobacterium szulgai infection.

Background And Aims: Presence of active hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may influence the outcome of patients treated for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although this issue has never been adequately assessed in a large series of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of active HCV affects the survival of patients treated for HCC.

Methods: This study assessed the outcome of 3123 anti-HCV-positive patients with HCC, subdivided according to the presence of active HCV infection or previous sustained virological response (SVR).

Introduction: Plasma-based biomarkers have shown promise for clinical implementation, but their accuracy in differentiating Alzheimer's disease (AD) from syndromes associated with frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) has yet to be fully investigated. This study assessed the potential of plasma biomarkers for differential diagnosis.

Methods: This cohort study included 374 participants (96 AD, 278 FTLD).
