The daily time course of changes In the secretion of dehydroepiandrosterone, its sulfate, and Cortisol, as well as their precursors (17-α-hydroxypregnenolone, 17-α-hydroxyprogesterone, and 11-deoxycortisol) was studied in patients with Itsenko-Cushing syndrome and disease. The mean daily blood concentrations were calculated for each hormone. The activity of the enzymatic systems of steroidogenesis was estimated from the ratio of the mean daily concentrations of the precursor of an enzymatic reaction to those of its product.

The organ culture transplantation of the adrenals cortical substance of a newborn piglets was applied while 94 patients treatment to whom total adrenalectomy for Itsenko--Cushing disease was done. Significant lowering of the substitutional hormonal therapy (steroid preparations) dosage was permitted due to the noted improvement of hypocorticism clinical course and an organism hormonal security indexes. The clinical effect duration is 6-9 months.

Ultrasonic study conducted during an operation is finding wider use lately. Surgery is the main method of treatment of most diseases of the adrenals, therefore problems of topical intraoperative diagnosis are very urgent. Twenty-three patients were operated on for Itsenko-Cushing's disease and syndrome and tumors of the retroperitoneal space at the Faculty Surgical Clinic of the Moscow Medical Academy within a period of 12 months.

The authors represent the results of the treatment of 20 children with Itsenko-Cushing disease (ICD) by proton-beam irradiation of the pituitary body. The use of the medical proton beam of the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics was found to be effective for the treatment of children with mild and average forms of ICD. Irradiation of the pituitary gland at a dose of 70-100 Gy is accompanied by general and local radiation reactions which are not dangerous for children.
