In the field of surface synthesis, various reactions driven by the catalytic effect of metal substrates, particularly the Ullmann reaction, have been thoroughly investigated. The Wurtz reaction facilitates the coupling of alkyl halides through the removal of halogen atoms with a low energy barrier on the surface; however, the preparation of novel carbon nanostructures via the Wurtz reaction has been scarcely reported. Here, we report the successful synthesis of ethyl-bridged binaphthyl molecular chains on Ag(111) at room temperature via the Wurtz reaction.

Robust organic molecules that place functional groups at well-defined angular and radial separations are valued as connectors in synthetic chemistry. Examples include rigid, polyvalent arenes and bicyclic compounds featuring strong C-C or C-H bonds. Non-aromatic rings like cyclohexane are rare in this context due to the challenge of stereochemical control over C-H functionalization.

Carbohydrates, essential biological building blocks, exhibit functional mechanisms tied to their intricate stereochemistry. Subtle stereochemical differences, such as those between the anomers maltose and cellobiose, lead to distinct properties due to their differing glycosidic bonds; the former is digestible by humans, while the latter is not. This underscores the importance of precise structural determination of individual carbohydrate molecules for deeper functional insights.

Cyclodextrins (CDs) were the first identified molecules and arguably the most consequential molecules in the areas of macrocyclic science and technology. As carbohydrates, their intrinsic architecture and chirality have played a fundamental role in their response to and effect on guest molecules. Indeed, the nature of inclusion complexation was formalized with CD-based hosts.

Obtaining optically-pure enantiopure in a cost-efficient and eco-friendly manner is of high importance to human health and environmental sustainability. Currently, enantioselective liquid-liquid extraction (ELLE) is one of the promising processes because of its green production and advantages in scaling up. Nonetheless, the ELLE method for enantioseparation is still unsatisfactory due to the poor efficiency.
