This study was to compare the suitability and precision of xerographic and computer-assisted methods for bite mark investigations. Eleven subjects were asked to bite on their forearm and the bite marks were photographically recorded. Alginate impressions of the subjects' dentition were taken and their casts were made using dental stone.

Bite mark comparison protocols include measurement and analysis of the pattern, size, and shape of teeth against similar characteristics observed in an injury on skin or a mark on an object. The physical comparison of tooth position often depends upon transparent acetate overlays to detect similarities or differences between the teeth and the bite mark. Several methods are used to produce life-sized comparison overlays.

Physical comparison of a suspect's teeth to a bite mark injury using hollow volume comparison overlays is a common forensic odontology technique. Several methods are used to record characteristics of the size, shape and position of the teeth and to generate overlays. These include computer-based, radiographic, xerographic and hand-traced methods.

The optimum x-ray spectra for acquisition of digital mammographic images using an amorphous selenium (a-Se) photoconductor are investigated. The recorded images consist of latent charge distributions on the surface of an a-Se plate, which are then read out using two methods, laser discharge, or flat panel recharge. The investigation is based on a model of the breast previously developed for a phosphor-based digital readout system, and has been extended to include the effects specific to the use of photoconductors.

In a visually oriented field such as diagnostic radiology, illustrations, diagrams, and other types of art-work can complement verbal description and photographs, simplify the description of anatomic concepts, and add interest and aesthetic value to a presentation or manuscript. The vast potential of the microcomputer for creating high-quality art and graphics is being realized by the availability of high-level illustration programs running on fast computer systems. Advanced microcomputer applications for illustration have the tools to compose and execute drawings of virtually unlimited detail and complexity.
