In a 60-year man with a very slowly progressive motor disturbance probably of torsion systonic or choreoathetotic type which started in childhood, we found an isolated degeneration of the exterior pallidum with intraneuronal deposition of Bielschowsky bodies and only slight deficit of neurons. The Bielschowsky bodies show the same structure as corpora amylacea and Lafora bodies. They might also be the result of a cellular disturbance mainly concerning the carbohydrate metabolism. In this case they are localised only in the neurons of the exterior part of the pallidum--in contrast to the organogenitically otherwise deriving (from the nucl. entopeduncularis) intact neurons of the pallidum internum--and they induce, after an excessive accumulation of the metabolites, not till extremely late loss of neurons. This circumstance explains the very torpid progress of this disease.

Background: The key to the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is to be able to predict and diagnose AD at the preclinical or early stage, but the lack of a preclinical model of AD is the critical factor that causes this problem to remain unresolved.
Methods: We assessed 18 monkeys in vivo evaluation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and AD pathological biomarkers (n = 9 / type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) group, age 20, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) ≥ 100 mg/dL, and n = 9 / negative control (NC) group, age 17, FPG < 100 mg/dL). Levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines and AD pathological biomarkers was measured by ELISA and Simoa Technology, respectively.

A 57-year-old female chimpanzee presented with a brief history of increasing lethargy and rapidly progressive lower-limb weakness that culminated in loss of use. Postmortem examination revealed no significant gross lesions in the nervous system or other organ systems. Histological analysis revealed round, basophilic to amphophilic polyglucosan bodies (PGBs) in the white and gray matter of the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and coccygeal regions of spinal cord.

Background: Axons, crucial for impulse transmission and cellular trafficking, are thought to be primary targets of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Axonal degeneration occurs early, preceeding and exceeding neuronal loss, and contributes to the spread of pathology, yet is poorly described outside the nigrostriatal circuitry. The insula, a cortical brain hub, was recently discovered to be highly vulnerable to pathology and plays a role in cognitive deficits in PD and DLB.

Lafora disease is an autosomal recessive glycogen-storage disorder resulting from an accumulation of toxic polyglucosan bodies (PGBs) in the central nervous system, which causes behavioral and neurologic symptoms in humans and other animals. In this case study, brains collected from two young adult free-ranging moose () cows that were seemingly blind and found walking in circles were examined by light and electron microscopy. Microscopic analysis of the hippocampus of the brain revealed inclusion bodies resembling PGBs in the neuronal perikaryon, neuronal processes, and neuropil.
