Mercury is a pervasive global pollutant, with primary anthropogenic sources including mining, industrial processes, and mercury-containing products such as dental amalgams. These sources release mercury into the environment, where it accumulates in ecosystems and enters the food chain, notably through bioamplification in marine life, posing a risk to human health. Dental amalgams, widely used for over a century, serve as a significant endogenous source of inorganic mercury.

Three fish species (common carp, Wels catfish, and silver carp) were collected from three locations along the Danube River in Serbia, and fish meat was analyzed for the content of toxic elements, micro- and macrominerals. Silver carp had the highest lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) content, while Wels catfish had the highest level of mercury (Hg). Moreover, metal pollution index (MPI) ranged from 0.

Background: The human gut microbiota has a critical role in several aspects of host homeostasis, such as immune development, metabolism, nutrition, and defense against pathogens during life. It can be sensitive to xenobiotics including drugs, diet, or even environmental pollutants, especially heavy metals (HMs). The findings of some previous studies are heterogeneous due to the inclusion of various types of study (human, and animal studies) and wide exposures (phthalate, bisphenol A, HMS, etc.

Nano-plastics (NPs) and heavy metals have attracted growing scientific attention because of both pollutants' wide distribution and ecotoxicity. However, the long-term combined toxicity of NPs and mercury (Hg) on planktonic copepods, a crucial presence in marine environments, is unknown. Here, our study aimed to investigate the multigenerational phenotypic responses of the planktonic copepod Pseudodiaptomus annandalei to polystyrene NPs (about 50 nm) and Hg (alone or combined) at environmentally realistic concentrations (23 μg/L for NPs and 1 μg/L for Hg), and the underlying molecular mechanisms were explored.

Elevated methylmercury (MeHg) exposure poses significant risks to bird health, behavior, and reproduction. Still, the risk of MeHg exposure to forest birds, accounting for over 80 % of the world's bird species, is poorly understood. This study combines Hg isotopes and video analysis, aiming to assess MeHg exposure risks to a forest riverine songbird, the spotted forktail (Enicurus maculatus) from a remote subtropical montane forest.
