High frequency ultrasonic characterization of human vocal fold tissue.

Recently, endolaryngeal sonography at frequencies ranging from 10 to 30 MHz has been found to be useful in diagnosing diseases of the vocal folds (VFs). However, image resolution can be further improved by ultrasound at higher frequencies, necessitating the measurement of high-frequency acoustic properties of VF tissue. The ultrasonic parameters of integrated backscatter, sound velocity, and frequency-dependent attenuation coefficient were measured in both the lamina propria (LP) and vocalis muscle (VM) of human VFs using a 47 MHz high-frequency ultrasonic transducer.

An endolaryngeal method of vertico-lateral elevation and fixation of the vocal fold in the treatment of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis is described. In 62 patients on whom this operative procedure was performed, a considerable improvement in respiration at the same time as almost unchanged phonation has been obtained in 61 cases. The results are illustrated by sonograms and respirometric examinations.

The morphologically recognizable effects of highly dosed ultrasound application on the growing rabbit's larynx (5 Watt/cm2 for 10 min) were studied by means of scanning electron microscopic (SEM) and reflecting light microscopic (RLM) methods. It could be shown that the area of cartilaginous necrosis corresponded exactly to the location of ultrasound application and was sharply limited by the normal cartilage. After a survival period of six weeks, areas of chondroneogenesis became visible on the endolaryngeal perichondrium.
