Acid catalyzed condensation of -alkyltripyrranes with trialdehydes derived from 1,3-cyclopentadiene or methyl-1,3-cyclopentadiene, followed by oxidation with aqueous ferric chloride solutions, gave 23-alkyl-21-carbaporphyrin-2-carbaldehydes in 22-27% yield together with weakly aromatic oxycarbaporphyrins. The carbaporphyrins reacted with palladium(II) acetate or nickel(II) acetate to give organometallic complexes but in both cases alkyl group migration took place to generate 21-alkyl derivatives. Although this type of reactivity had been observed previously for palladium complexes, this is the first time the phenomenon has been seen in nickel(II) carbaporphyrins.

Trivalent actinide expanded porphyrin complexes have been of synthetic interest since the isolation of the series of trivalent lanthanide texaphyrin complexes in 1992, however, synthesis of these actinide-based complexes has not yet been achieved. In this work, a computational study with relativistic density functional theory was performed to determine how trivalent actinide ions (Ac through Lr) interact with Schiff base expanded porphyrin macrocycles in a methanol solvent as an alternate pathway to stabilization. A thorough analysis of structural parameters, electronic structure, stability of microsolvation environments, and relative binding energies provided insight into the most stable structures.

The impact of Ricinus straw on tomato growth and soil microbial community.

Front Microbiol

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Biology and Genetic Improvement of Horticultural Crops (Northeast Region), Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Northeast Agricultural University, Harbin, China.

Returning straw can alter the soil microbial community, reduce the occurrence of soilborne diseases, and promote plant growth. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of Ricinus straw on tomato growth and rhizosphere microbial community. We carried out microcosm experiments to investigate the effects of Ricinus straw with different dosages (0, 1, and 3%) on tomato dry biomass and rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities.

Iron zeolites are promising candidates for mitigating nitrous oxide (NO), a potent greenhouse gas and contributor to stratospheric ozone destruction. However, the atomic-level mechanisms by which different iron species, including isolated sites, clusters, and particles, participate in NO decomposition in the presence of CO still remain poorly understood, which hinders the application of the reaction in practical technology. Herein, through experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identified that isolated iron sites were active for NO activation to generate adsorbed O* species, which readily reacted with CO following the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.
