Studies of in situ plant response and adaptation to complex environmental stresses, are crucial for understanding the mechanisms of formation and functioning of ecosystems of anthropogenically transformed habitats. We study short- and long-term responses of photosynthetic apparatus (PSA) and anti-oxidant capacity to complex abiotic stresses of common plants Calamagrostis epigejos and Solidago gigantea in semi-natural (C) and heavy metal contaminated habitats (LZ). We found significant differences in leaf pigment content between both plant species growing on LZ plots and their respective C populations.

Ferredoxin 1 and 2 (FDX1/2) constitute an evolutionarily conserved FDX family of iron-sulfur cluster (ISC) containing proteins. FDX1/2 are cognate substrates of ferredoxin reductase (FDXR) and serve as conduits for electron transfer from NADPH to a set of proteins involved in biogenesis of steroids, hemes, ISC and lipoylated proteins. Recently, we showed that Fdx1 is essential for embryonic development and lipid homeostasis.

Chimeric Peptide-Engineered Polyprodrug Enhances Cytotoxic T Cell Response by Inducing Immunogenic Cell Death and Upregulating Major Histocompatibility Complex Class I.

ACS Nano

December 2024

The Fifth Affiliated Hospital, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Molecular Target & Clinical Pharmacology, the NMPA and State Key Laboratory of Respiratory Disease, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou 511436, China.

Tumor-specific cytotoxic T cell immunity is critically dependent on effective antigen presentation and sustained signal transduction. However, this immune response is frequently compromised by the inherently low immunogenicity of breast cancer and the deficiency in major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) expression. Herein, a chimeric peptide-engineered stoichiometric polyprodrug (PDPP) is fabricated to potentiate the cytotoxic T cell response, characterized by a high drug loading capacity and precise stoichiometric drug ratio, of which the immunogenic cell death (ICD) inducer of protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) and the epigenetic drug of decitabine (DAC) are condensed into a polyprodrug called PpIX-DAC.

Vitamin D supplements reduce risk of viral upper respiratory infections in children with lower concentrations.

Acta Paediatr

December 2024

Department of Medicine, Paediatric Outpatient Clinic, Helgeland Hospital, Sandnessjøen, Norway.

Aim: Vitamin D is crucial for the immune system, as it enhances pathogen-fighting cells and reduces inflammation. We reviewed serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations in children with viral upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) and the impact of vitamin D supplements on those infections.

Methods: A mini literature review was conducted from 1 January 2000 to 30 April 2024.

Valine Restriction Extends Survival in a Drosophila Model of Short-Chain Enoyl-CoA Hydratase 1 (ECHS1) Deficiency.

J Inherit Metab Dis

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry and La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, La Trobe University, Bundoora, Victoria, Australia.

Short-chain enoyl-CoA hydratase 1 deficiency (ECHS1D) is a rare genetic disorder caused by biallelic pathogenic variants in the ECHS1 gene. ECHS1D is characterised by severe neurological and physical impairment that often leads to childhood mortality. Therapies such as protein and single nutrient-restricted diets show poor efficacy, whereas the development of new treatments is hindered by the low prevalence of the disorder and a lack of model systems for treatment testing.
