Introduction: Recent studies have investigated the autonomic modulation method using closed-loop vibration stimulation (CLVS) as a novel strategy for enhancing sleep quality. This study aimed to explore the effects of CLVS on sleep quality, autonomic regulation, and brain activity in individuals with poor sleep quality.

Methods: Twenty-seven participants with poor sleep quality (Pittsburgh sleep quality index >5) underwent two experimental sessions using polysomnography and a questionnaire, one with CLVS (STIM) and the other without (SHAM).

Sensory dysfunction in SMA type 2 and 3 - adaptive mechanism or concomitant target of damage?

Orphanet J Rare Dis

September 2024

Clinical Department of Neurology, University Centre of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Faculty of Medicine, Wroclaw Medical University, Borowska 213, Wroclaw, 50-556, Poland.

Background: The motor neuron survival protein performs numerous cellular functions; hence, spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is considered to be a multi-organ disease with possible sensory system damage. The controversy surrounding the presence of sensory disturbances, prompted us to conduct standard electrophysiological studies and assess the sensory thresholds for different modalities in adults with SMA types 2 and 3. The study group consisted of 44 adult SMA patients (types 2 and 3).

Article Synopsis
  • * The disease is linked to mutations in the frataxin (FXN) gene that disrupt iron regulation within cells, causing harmful iron buildup and oxidative stress that lead to neuron death.
  • * A study analyzed 226 FXN genetic variants, confirming a majority have harmful effects on protein function, and created a 3D model of FXN to understand significant mutations (I154F and W155R), revealing they disrupt essential protein interactions critical for its maturation. *

Biermer's disease (BD) or pernicious anemia (PA) is an autoimmune atrophic gastritis characterized by the absence of intrinsic factor (IF) secretion, leading to malabsorption of vitamin B12 in the ileum. Its clinical manifestations are primarily hematological, with neuropsychiatric and cardiovascular manifestations being less common. We present the case of a patient with PA diagnosed based on neurological and cardiovascular complications.
