Experimental Study on Penetration of Smaller Inferior Vena Cava after Conical Filter Placement: Results in a Swine Model.

Ann Vasc Surg

January 2025

Department of Interventional and Vascular Radiology, Nanjing First Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China. Electronic address:

Objectives: Inferior vena cava (IVC) penetration is a prevalent complication following the placement of conical filters. However, there is a paucity of studies examining the penetration in smaller IVC. The objective of this study was to assess the time of penetration, the incidence of serious complications associated with penetration, and the process of IVC wall repair in the smaller IVC following the placement of a conical filter.

Supply Costs in Complex and Routine Inferior Vena Cava Filter Retrieval: 10 Years' Data from a Single Center.

J Vasc Interv Radiol

April 2024

Division of Interventional Radiology, Department of Radiology, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Electronic address:

Purpose: To characterize the medical supply costs associated with inferior vena cava filter retrieval (IVCFR) using endobronchial forceps (EFs), a snare, or Recovery Cone (RC).

Materials And Methods: In total, 594 of 845 IVCFRs attempted at a tertiary referral hospital between October 1, 2012, and June 20, 2022 were categorized by intended retrieval strategy informed by, rotational cavography as follows: (a) EF (n = 312) for tilted or tip-embedded/strut-embedded filters and for long-dwelling closed-cell filters and (b) a snare (n = 255) or (c) RC (n = 27) for other well-positioned filters with or mostly without hooks, respectively. List prices of relevant supplies at time of retrieval were obtained or, rarely, estimated using a standard procedure.

Unlabelled: We report a case of a 54-year-old man with atrial septal defect who presented with oxygen desaturation on pulse oximetry. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and transesophageal echocardiography showed right-to-left shunting through an atrial septal defect, which was confirmed by superior vena cavography and suggested Eisenmenger syndrome. However, cardiac catheterization revealed a normal pulmonary arterial pressure.

To determine feasibility of removing inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) with massive thrombus (>1*1cm) under protection of suprarenal IVCFs, and evaluate the filter thrombus detachment due to removal. The patients who had massive infrarenal IVCFs thrombus and received retrieval under protection of suprarenal IVCFs were retrospectively reviewed from July 2018 to December 2021. Medical data of them including demographics, filter types, dwell time, management, thrombus detachment was collected, and analyzed.

Iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) is defined as extrinsic compression of the left common iliac vein (LCIV) between the overlying right common iliac artery and the lumbar vertebra. The most severe complication is phlegmasia cerulea dolens (PCD), a medical emergency that requires quick intervention to prevent irreversible limb ischemia. This article reports the case of a patient with PCD as the first manifestation of IVCS.
