Thiamine and pyridoxine are essential B vitamins that serve as enzymatic cofactors in energy metabolism, protein and nucleic acid biosynthesis, and neurotransmitter production. In humans, thiamine transporters SLC19A2 and SLC19A3 primarily regulate cellular uptake of both vitamins. Genetic mutations in these transporters, which cause thiamine and pyridoxine deficiency, have been implicated in severe neurometabolic diseases.

The risk of developing diabetes and cardiometabolic disorders is associated with increased levels of alpha-aminoadipic acid and disturbances in the metabolism of branched-chain amino acids. The side effects of the widely used antidiabetic drug metformin include impaired degradation of branched-chain amino acids and inhibition of intracellular thiamin transport. These effects may be interconnected, as thiamine deficiency impairs the functioning of thiamine diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent dehydrogenases of 2-oxo acids involved in amino acids degradation, while diabetes is often associated with perturbed thiamine status.

Caused by the Gram-positive bacteria Clostridium perfringens, necrotic enteritis (NE) is an enteric disease with significant economic implications in broiler production. This study employed an experimental NE model involving co-infection with Eimeria maxima and C. perfringens to assess whether sulfate polysaccharides extracted from marine macroalgae could mitigate the adverse effects of NE in broilers.

Coccidiosis is a protozoan disease caused by Eimeria species and is a major threat to the poultry industry. Different anti-coccidial drugs (diclazuril, amprolium, halofuginone, ionophores, sulphaquinoxaline, clopidol, and ethopabate) and vaccines have been used for their control. Still, due to the development of resistance, their efficacy has been limited.
