Understanding the evolution of spin-orbit torque (SOT) with increasing heavy-metal thickness in ferromagnet/normal metal (FM/NM) bilayers is critical for the development of magnetic memory based on SOT. However, several experiments have revealed an apparent discrepancy between damping enhancement and damping-like SOT regarding their dependence on NM thickness. Here, using linewidth and phase-resolved amplitude analysis of vector network analyzer ferromagnetic resonance (VNA-FMR) measurements, we simultaneously extract damping enhancement and both field-like and damping-like inverse SOT in NiFe/Pt bilayers as a function of Pt thickness.

Investigation of Transformation Pathways of Polyfluoroalkyl Substances during Chlorine Disinfection.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Missouri, Columbia, Missouri 65211, United States.

Recent regulations on perfluorinated compounds in drinking water underscore the need for a deeper understanding of the formation of perfluorinated compounds from polyfluoroalkyl substances during chlorine disinfection. Among the compounds investigated in this study, N-(3-(dimethylaminopropan-1-yl)perfluoro-1-hexanesulfonamide (N-AP-FHxSA) underwent rapid transformation during chlorination. Within an hour, it produced quantitative yields of various poly- and per-fluorinated products, including perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA).

Mechanism and catalytic activity of the water-gas shift reaction on a single-atom alloy Al/Cu (111) surface.

Nanoscale

January 2025

School of Chemistry, Dalian University of Technology, No.2 Linggong Road, Dalian City, Liaoning Province, 116024, P. R. China.

The mechanism and activity of the water-gas shift reaction (WGSR) on single-atom alloy Al/Cu (111) and Cu (111) surfaces were studied using GGA-PBE-D3. Al/Cu (111) exhibited bifunctional active sites, with the Al site being positively charged and the Cu site negatively charged due to electronic interactions. This led to selective adsorption of HO and CO.

Infective endocarditis is a life-threatening disease and the early diagnosis is crucial for a better outcome. We report an old adult who developed infective endocarditis in association with new-onset maxillary sinusitis as well as proptosis, which was caused by an orbital mass lesion in the background of pre-existing orbital vascular malformation. A 74-year-old woman was found incidentally to have right orbital vascular (venous) malformation by head magnetic resonance imaging when she was hospitalized for left dorsal pontine infarction.

The last giant impact on Earth is thought to have formed the Moon. The timing of this event can be determined by dating the different rocks assumed to have crystallized from the lunar magma ocean (LMO). This has led to a wide range of estimates for the age of the Moon between 4.
