The purpose of this study is to describe, in detail, the ultrastructure of the infundibulum of the sexually mature and active female green iguana, Iguana iguana. The infundibulum of five iguanas was remarkably distinct from the uterus, and was also clearly demarcated into cranial (expanded v-shaped) and caudal (tubular) divisions. Tissue samples obtained from five portions (three from the cranial division and two from the caudal division) of the infundibulum were processed conventionally for light and electron microscopy.

The World Health Organization classification of pituitary tumours, published in 2022, supported a change in the terminology from "pituitary adenoma" to "pituitary neuroendocrine tumour" (PitNET). The neuroendocrine cells represent an integral part of the diffuse neuroendocrine system, including, among others, thyroid C cells, the parathyroid chief cells, and the anterior pituitary. Normal and neoplastic adenohypophyseal neuroendocrine cells have light microscopic, ultrastructural features and an immunoprofile compatible with the neuroendocrine cells and neuroendocrine tumours from other organs.

This article relates the life, career and main scientific achievements of a pioneer in neuroendocrinology and French cell biology research, Mrs Andrée Tixier-Vidal, who passed away in December 2021. After her first works on hypophyseal-thyroid neuroendocrine axis, in birds then in mammals, Andrée Tixier-Vidal devoted herself then her group at the College of France to the histophysiological study of adenohypophysis and namely of prolactin (PRL) cells. Using in vitro models of organotypic cultures and cultures of GH3 cells, she described up to ultrastructural level the secretory process of PRL and its regulation by TRH.

In the present study, we evaluated how Ptprn-2 (encoding tyrosine phosphatase, receptor type, N2 polypeptide protein) affects the onset of puberty in female rats. We evaluated the expression of Ptprn-2 mRNA and protein in the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovary axis of female rats using real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and immunofluorescence at infancy, prepuberty, puberty, peripuberty, and adulthood. We evaluated the effects of Ptprn-2 gene knockdown on different aspects of reproduction-related biology in female rats, including the expression levels of puberty-related genes in vivo and in vitro, the time to onset of puberty, the concentration of serum reproductive hormones, the morphology of ovaries, and the ultrastructure of pituitary gonadotropin cells.
