SARS-CoV-2 Infection and Liver Transplant: How Are We Now?

Transplant Proc

January 2025

Gastroenterolgy and Hepatology Department, Group of Clinical and Translational Research in Liver Diseases, Research Institution Valdecilla (IDIVAL), University Hospital Marqués de Valdecilla, Santander, Spain. Electronic address:

Background: The Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 emerged as a new variant of concern, characterized by high transmissibility and lower severity compared with previous variants, and became the majority variant in the sixth wave in Spain. This study aims to assess the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on liver transplant recipients (LTRs) during 2023 in the population of Cantabria.

Methods: The study included 295 LTRs undergoing follow-up at the Liver Transplant Unit of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital.

[Preparation and immunogenicity evaluation of ferritin nanoparticles conjugated with African swine fever virus p30 protein].

Sheng Wu Gong Cheng Xue Bao

December 2024

State Key Laboratory for Animal Disease Control and Prevention, College of Veterinary Medicine, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou Veterinary Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, Gansu, China.

This study developed ferritin-based nanoparticles carrying the African swine fever virus (ASFV) p30 protein and evaluated their immunogenicity, aiming to provide an experimental basis for the research on nanoparticle vaccines against ASFV. Initially, the gene sequences encoding the p30 protein and SpyTag were fused and inserted into the pCold-I vector to create the pCold-p30 plasmid. The gene sequences encoding SpyCatcher and ferritin were fused and then inserted into the pET-28a(+) vector to produce the pET-F-np plasmid.

Design and evaluation of a multi-epitope HIV-1 vaccine based on human parvovirus virus-like particles.

December 2024

Mucosal Immunoogy Laboratory, Biomedicine Research Unit, Faculty of Higher Studies Iztacala, National Autonomous University of Mexico. Avenida de los Barrios 1, Los Reyes Iztacala, Tlalnepantla, Estado de México 54090, Mexico. Electronic address:

The development of a protective HIV vaccine remains a challenge given the high antigenic diversity and mutational rate of the virus, which leads to viral escape and establishment of reservoirs in the host. Modern antigen design can guide immune responses towards conserved sites, consensus sequences or normally subdominant epitopes, thus enabling the development of broadly neutralizing antibodies and polyfunctional lymphocyte responses. Conventional epitope vaccines can often be impaired by low immunogenicity, a limitation that may be overcome by using a carrier system.

The persistence of SARS-CoV-2 infections at a global level reflects the repeated emergence of variant strains encoding unique constellations of mutations. These variants have been generated principally because of a dynamic host immune landscape, the countermeasures deployed to combat disease, and selection for enhanced infection of the upper airway and respiratory transmission. The resulting viral diversity creates a challenge for vaccination efforts to maintain efficacy, especially regarding humoral aspects of protection.

Spatial transcriptomics and immune cell profiling of the host ectocervical landscape of HIV infected Kenyan sex working women.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Department of Medicine Solna, Division of Infectious Diseases, Karolinska Institutet, Division of Infectious Diseases, Karolinska University Hospital, Center for Molecular Medicine, Stockholm, Sweden.

Introduction: Chronic immune activation is a hallmark of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection that significantly impacts disease pathogenesis. However, in-depth studies characterizing the immunological landscape of the ectocervix during chronic HIV infection remain scarce despite the importance of this tissue site for HIV transmission.

Methods: Ectocervical tissue samples were obtained from antiretroviral-naïve HIV-seropositive and -seronegative Kenyan female sex workers.
