Carnivorous Plants from Nepenthaceae and Droseraceae as a Source of Secondary Metabolites.

Molecules

February 2023

Department of Plant Cytology and Embryology, Institute of Botany, Faculty of Biology, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, 9 Gronostajowa St., 30-387 Cracow, Poland.

Carnivorous plants are able to attract small animals or protozoa and retain them in their specialized traps. Later, the captured organisms are killed and digested. The nutrients contained in the prey bodies are absorbed by the plants to use for growth and reproduction.

The tree fern (Kunth) C. Presl is common in the rainforests of Central and South America, where suspensions of the dried rhizome are traditionally used to treat intestinal diseases. Two compounds from this plant, 2-deprenyl-rheediaxanthone B (XB) and 2-deprenyl-7-hydroxy-rheediaxanthone B (OH-XB), have been shown to be biologically highly active against colorectal cancer (CRC) cells in previous studies.

The chemical investigation of the roots and stems of yielded a new dihydrostilbene derivative, 4'-hydroxy-3,3',4-trimethoxy-5-(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenoxy)-bibenzyl (), two phenanthrenes (-), and three dihydrophenanthrenes (-), along with one lignan, three triterpenoids, one aurone, one flavone, one naphthoquinone, and two benzoic acid derivatives. Their structures were determined by 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques and/or mass spectrometry data. The occurrence of dihydrostilbenoid, phenanthrene and dihydrophenanthrene derivatives is unprecedented in a species native to the American continent.

A synthetic cyclitol-nucleoside conjugate polyphosphate is a highly potent second messenger mimic.

Reactions that form ethers are well known, but few lead to compounds with dense functionality around the -linkage. Replacement of the α-glucopyranosyl unit of adenophostin A, a potent d--inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (IPR) agonist, with a d--inositol surrogate acting substantially as a pseudosugar, leads to "d--inositol adenophostin". At its core, this cyclitol-nucleoside trisphosphate comprises a nucleoside sugar linked via an axial d--inositol 1-hydroxyl-adenosine 3'-ribose ether linkage.
