Objective: Endoscopic arytenoid abduction lateropexy (EAAL) is a minimally invasive surgical technique for the immediate management of bilateral vocal fold palsy (BVFP). Specifically, it achieves a stable and adequate airway by lateralizing the arytenoid cartilage without resecting laryngeal structures. Thus, this study evaluated the effect of EAAL on swallowing in cases of BVFP.

Respiratory viruses were frequently detected in young children with cystic fibrosis but had limited clinical significance.

Acta Paediatr

December 2024

Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Danish PCD & Child Centre, CF Centre Copenhagen, Paediatric Pulmonary Service, Copenhagen University Hospital, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark.

Aim: Knowledge about the clinical role that respiratory viruses play in infants and toddlers with cystic fibrosis (CF) remains limited. We determined the prevalence of respiratory viruses in routine respiratory secretion samples in children aged 0-3 years with CF. Associations with bacterial infections, respiratory tract symptoms and lung function were also explored.

Objectives: Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for benign glottic conditions is scarcely represented in the literature. We aimed in this study to report on the technical feasibility of an explicitly transoral robotic approach for a patient with posterior glottic stenosis, and to highlight extant limitations in exposure and robotic instrumentation of the glottis.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of a single patient undergoing a TORS approach to maximize the posterior glottic aperture.

Article Synopsis
  • Surgery for bilateral vocal fold immobility (BVFI) seeks to improve airway function while maintaining voice and swallowing capabilities, and current methods often result in challenging healing outcomes and granulation tissue issues.
  • A case-series analysis of eight BVFI patients who underwent a new surgical technique showed successful decannulation rates and improved respiratory symptoms without negatively impacting long-term voice or swallowing functions.
  • The proposed method, submucosal thyroarytenoid myomectomy with arytenoidectomy, effectively utilizes body’s natural healing processes while preserving important laryngeal structures, enhancing overall treatment effectiveness for BVFI.

Objective: To compare perioperative and oncological outcomes between stapler and manual closure in patients undergoing total laryngectomy for advanced endolaryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.

Methods: Patients with advanced endolaryngeal tumours operated between July 2017 and July 2023 were retrospectively dichotomised into stapler closure and manual closure cohorts and compared.

Results: Seventy-one patients with a median age of 57 years were included in our study.
