English In 2019, key players from politics, society, social insurance providers, care and medicine initiated the process of developing the National Dementia Strategy under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth and the German Alzheimer's Association, and in 2020, the strategy was officially adopted. The National Dementia Strategy aims to improve the lives and care of people with dementia in Germany. To this end, four fields of action were defined, covering the areas of social participation, support and advice for people with dementia and their relatives, nursing and medical care, and research.

Background: Studies investigating the effectiveness of delirium e-learning tools in clinical practice are scarce. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of a delirium e-learning tool on healthcare workers' delirium recognition, delirium knowledge and care strain in delirium.

Methods: A pilot pre-posttest study in a convenience sample of 59 healthcare workers recruited from medical, surgical, geronto-psychiatric and rehabilitation units of a university hospital.

The Aalborg Model of elderly care contains the following new concepts: It is a comprehensive system, including housing, activities, a food service, practical assistance, nursing care, physical rehabilitation and counselling. High priority is given to the earlier detection of illness and of special needs in an attempt to enrich the quality of life of the elderly and to reduce the cost of treatment. Suitable, independent housing for the elderly has been integrated into ordinary residential areas.

Based on a previous questionnaire about psychiatric care in the Swiss cantons (and from other sources), the author tries to give an overview of the evolution of socio-psychiatric concepts, methods of treatment and changes in institutions in Switzerland during the last 10-15 years. According to certain criteria he shows that social psychiatry developed extensively in many places during this period. Most important are the new half-way-institutions (day- and night-hospitals, foster-homes, centers of rehabilitation, sheltered apartments etc.

Individual psychotherapy with the old is being described and analyzed on the basis of treatment experiences with 48 geriatric and gerontopsychiatric patients aged 80 to 96. Furthermore conditions of successfully integrating psychotherapists in the team of geriatric hospital are examined. Special problems in treating the chronically and terminally ill are dealt with and resulting therapeutical aims are discussed.
