Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxicant with adverse effects on visual systems from fish to man. Clinical signs of visual deficits including color-vision alterations, visual field constriction and blindness have been frequently identified in patients and affected animals following acute and chronic exposure to MeHg. However, it is still unclear whether MeHg causes developmental defects in the eye.

Determining dietary recommendations for seafood consumed during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood requires consideration of the known nutritional benefits and potential harm due to toxicant exposure as they relate to child outcomes. This study aimed to describe the scope of the evidence associated with seafood-related toxicant exposure and child outcomes and to identify toxicant-outcome pairs that may have sufficient evidence to conduct a systematic review. We included studies examining seafood toxicant exposure during pregnancy, lactation, and childhood, and child outcomes.

The on-going anthropogenic emission of toxic metal(loid) species into the environment contaminates the food supply and drinking water resources in various parts of the world. Given that inorganic pollutants cannot be degraded, their increased influx into the bloodstream of babies, children and pregnant women is inevitable. Since the ramifications of the ensuing environmental exposure on human health remain poorly defined, fundamentally new insight into their bioinorganic chemistry in organisms is urgently needed.

Mercury is a well-known neurotoxicant for humans and wildlife. The epidemic of mercury poisoning in Japan has clearly demonstrated that chronic exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) results in serious neurological damage to the cerebral and cerebellar cortex, leading to the dysfunction of the central nervous system (CNS), especially in infants exposed to MeHg in utero. The occurrences of poisoning have caused a wide public concern regarding the health risk emanating from MeHg exposure; particularly those eating large amounts of fish may experience the low-level and long-term exposure.
