"Developmental hemostasis" refers to the dynamic process of gradual hemostatic maturation. Conventional coagulation tests seem to fail to accurately depict the in vivo hemostasis, while viscoelastic tests, thromboelastography (TEG), and rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) appear very promising as they provide insight more rapidly and accurately into the hemostatic potential. Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4) inhibitors may offer novel therapeutic strategies in respiratory diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Therefore, selective PDE4 inhibitors may also provide a therapeutic option for very pre-term infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The anti-inflammatory effect of two PDE4 inhibitors was investigated in a pre-term rat model of hyperoxia-induced lung injury.

Factor (F) VIIa has been used to treat adults and children with a variety of bleeding disorders. The results from these studies cannot be extrapolated to newborns because their hemostatic system differs significantly from adults, which may influence the effects of FVIIa on thrombin (IIa) generation. We compared the effects of FVIIa concentrates on IIa generation in plasmas from adults, full-term newborns and pre-term newborns.
