Transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation during lower body negative pressure.

Auton Neurosci

August 2024

Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA, USA; Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA; University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Background: Para-sympathetic vagal activation has profound influence on heart rate and other cardiovascular parameters. We tested the hypothesis that transcutaneous Vagal Nerve Stimulation (tVNS) through the auricular branch of the vagus nerve would attenuate the normal sympathetic response to central blood volume reduction by lower body negative pressure (LBNP).

Method: 10 healthy volunteers (6 female; age 21 ± 2 years; weight 62 ± 13 kg; height 167 ± 12 cm) were included in this cross-over design trial.

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is characterized by a transient depression of contractile function of mid and/or apical segments of the left ventricle with compensatory hyperkinesis of the basal segment. It leads to ballooning of the apex in systole, resembling an octopus trap, hence the name. There have been many different arrhythmias associated with TCM.

Cardiac expression of Brn-3a and Brn-3b POU transcription factors and regulation of Hsp27 gene expression.

Cell Stress Chaperones

September 2008

Cardiovascular Division, King's College London School of Medicine, Department of Cardiology, The Rayne Institute, St Thomas's Hospital, Lambeth Palace Road, London, UK.

The Brn-3 family of transcription factors play a critical role in regulating expression of genes that control cell fate, including the small heat shock protein Hsp27. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between Brn-3a and Brn-3b and Hsp27 expression in the developing rodent heart. Brn-3a and Brn-3b were detected from embryonic days 9.

Twenty-four hours electrocardiogram from 4 patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and intraventricular aberrant conduction were analyzed. Aim of the study was to evaluate the reliability of the Ashman's and Akthar's rules in electrocardiographic differential diagnosis between aberrancy and ectopy. We computed parameters related to 10 RR interval preceding the aberrant conduction (AB+ Group), normal complex QRS (AB-Group) and ectopic QRS (E Group): coupling interval (CI), preceding CI cycle (PCL1), preceding PCL1 cycle (PCL2), the difference between PCL1 an PCL2 (delta PCL1), the difference between CI an PCL1 (delta CI), the mean value (RR10) and the standard deviation (RR10SD) of the 10 QRS complexes preceding the end of the sequence.

There has been increased interest in the beneficial effects of atrio-ventricular (AV) pacing over ventricular (V) pacing. This study attempted to evaluate the changes in cardiac output and left ventricular filling dynamics when the pacing mode was switched from V pacing to AV pacing. Study population consisted of 26 patients with multiprogrammable AV pacemakers.
