Simultaneous Determination of 12 Disinfection By-Products in Fish Muscles by Solvent Extraction Coupled With Gas Chromatography Equipped With an Electron Capture Detector.

J Sep Sci

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Yangtze River Environment, Ministry of Education, College of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai, the People's Republic of China.

Disinfection by-products (DBPs) have received considerable focus due to potential teratogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects; however, there is an evident gap in the availability of analytical methodologies for the simultaneous determination of DBPs in fish, especially iodinated DBPs. This paper developed an innovative analytical method for the simultaneous determination of 12 DBPs, including four trihalomethanes (THMs), three haloacetonitriles, and five iodinated THMs (I-THMs), in fish muscle, utilizing solvent extraction followed by gas chromatography with electron capture detection. The method incorporates tert-butyl methyl ether as an extraction solvent, performing efficient vortex mixing, extraction, and centrifugation under reduced temperature conditions to facilitate the processing of physically disrupted fish tissues.

Early developmental effects of propofol exposure in different stages of zebrafish embryos.

The mechanism of action of propofol, a common intravenous anaesthetic, in early life stages is not well understood with contradictory studies showing neurotoxic and neurogenic effects in the developing brain. Zebrafish early life stages have been established as an alternative model for animal experimentation with propofol toxicological effects reported following chronic exposure. Yet, the acute exposure to other anaesthetics has been shown to induce early life stage-dependent toxicological outcomes.

Innovations in Acne.

Dermatol Clin

January 2025

Department of Dermatology, Brigham and Women's Hospital, 41 Avenue Louis Pasteur, 317A, Boston, MA 02115, USA. Electronic address:

Although many treatments are available for acne, these can be limited by lack of effectiveness, patient tolerance and adherence, and accessibility. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the latest developments in acne management, exploring a range of topical, systemic, and procedural treatments. The mechanisms of action, pivotal trial data, and potential role in clinical practice are reviewed for emerging therapies such as 1726 nm laser, sarecycline, clascoterone, trifarotene, minocycline foam, and fixed-dose combination topicals.

Despite advancements in treatment of sickle cell disease (SCD), hydroxyurea, a ribonucleotide reductase inhibitor, remains the cornerstone of therapy. While its primary effect is the elevation of fetal hemoglobin (HbF), hydroxyurea's mechanisms of action are multifaceted. Hydroxyurea (HU) reduces leukocyte and platelet counts, decreases the expression of endothelial adhesion molecules CD36 and CD49d, and increases nitric oxide and cyclic nucleotide levels, which may facilitate vascular dilation and further HbF induction.
