Pseudomalignant osteoblastoma of the odontoid process.

Eur Spine J

July 2018

Orthopaedics Department, Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte, University Hospital of Santa Maria, Avenida Professor Egas Moniz, 1649-035, Lisbon, Portugal.

Introduction: The anterior elements of the spine, particularly the odontoid processes, are a rare location for osteoblastomas. Pseudomalignant osteoblastomas are themselves rare histologic types and are also extremely rare in this location. Most osteoblastomas are Enneking stage 2 lesions; less frequently, they can be more aggressive with extra-capsular extension (Enneking stage 3).

Radiation therapy continues to play an extremely valuable role in the treatment of malignancy. The effects of radiation therapy on normal tissue can present in a delayed fashion, resulting in localized damage with pseudomalignant transformation, producing a compressive effect on the spinal cord or exiting nerve roots. Infiltration of inflammatory cells and the subsequent fibrotic response can result in the development of an inflammatory pseudotumor (benign tumor-like lesion) with subsequent mass effect.

Extraskeletal osteochondroma near the hip: a pediatric case.

J Pediatr Orthop B

November 2010

Department of Pediatric Orthopedics, The Shengjing Hospital, China Medical University, Heping District, Shenyang, Liaoning, PR China.

Extraskeletal osteochondroma near the hip is rare and its pathological diagnosis is based on radiological and histopathological examination. It is vital that such a diagnosis be considered when a discrete, ossified mass is localized in soft tissues, even at atypical sites. Differential diagnoses include myositis ossificans, a lipomatous lesion, a pseudomalignant osseous tumour, an ossifying fibromyxoid tumour, an extraskeletal chondroma with endochondral ossification, synovial (osteo) chondromatosis, tumoural calcinosis, a synovial sarcoma and an extraskeletal osteosarcoma.

Florid reactive periostitis is the term used to describe a benign disease characterized by aggressive periosteal reaction and benign soft-tissue inflammation. Although it is considered rare, there are numerous reports in the literature that refer to this disease with different names such as parosteal fasciitis, fasciitis ossificans, benign fibro-osseous pseudotumor, pseudomalignant osseous tumor of soft tissue, and bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation. As a result, the nomenclature is confusing, and some authors have placed florid reactive periostitis ossificans into the heterogeneous group of pseudomalignant osseous tumors of soft tissue or proliferative periosteal processes, whereas other authors place this entity in the myositis ossificans group.
