Department of Anesthesiology, Hubei Key Laboratory of Geriatric Anesthesia and Perioperative Brain Health, Wuhan Clinical Research Center for Geriatric Anesthesia, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, 1095# Jiefang Ave, Wuhan, 430030, China.

Background: Ulinastatin (UTI), recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties, holds promise for patients undergoing cardiac surgery. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between intraoperative UTI administration and the incidence of delirium following cardiac surgery.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on a retrospective cohort of 6,522 adult cardiac surgery patients to evaluate the relationship between UTI treatment and the incident of postoperative delirium (POD) in patients ongoing cardiac surgery.

Background: Most existing studies focus on either the relationship between sarcopenia and depressive symptoms or sarcopenia and cognitive functions. Few studies have examined depressive symptoms and cognitive functions simultaneously. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sarcopenia and both depressive symptoms and cognitive functions in the elderly by introducing activities of daily living to explore the mediating role of activities of daily living between sarcopenia and mental health.

Pain sensitivity mediates the relationship between empathy for pain and psychopathic traits.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behavior, Radboud University, Thomas Van Aquinostraat 4, 6525, Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Psychopathic traits and antisocial behavior show a well-documented relationship with decreased empathic processing. It has been proposed that a reduced own experience of pain leads to perceiving others' pain as less severe, which potentially facilitates exploitative, aggressive behavior towards others. We evaluated the link between psychopathic traits, experimental pain sensitivity and empathy for pain in a community sample (n = 74).

Kennedy Krieger Institute, Department of Child Psychiatry, 707 North Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA; Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, 600 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21205, USA.

Functional tic-like behaviors (FTLBs) are a manifestation of functional neurologic disorder that can be mistaken for neurodevelopmental tic disorders like Tourette syndrome. Much information was gained about FTLBs because of an outbreak of FTLBs spreading among adolescents and young adults via social media during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. In comparison to neurodevelopmental tic disorders, FTLBs have an older age of onset, more abrupt symptom onset, and more complex tics as well as other features that would be atypical of Tourette syndrome.

Postpartum pyogenic sacroiliitis masquerading as sciatic neuropathy.

BMJ Case Rep

January 2025

Department of Orthopedics, SDM College of Medical Sciences and Hospital, Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara University, Dharwad, Karnataka, India.

Low back pain is common in women, especially during pregnancy and puerperium. Septic sacroiliitis, a rare cause of back pain in the postpartum period can mimic other common causes of low back pain like muscle strain, urinary tract infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, endometritis and intervertebral disc prolapse. The proximity of the sacroiliac joint to the sacral nerve plexus results in septic sacroiliitis frequently presenting with symptoms mimicking intervertebral disc prolapse.
