The Bruton non-receptor protein-tyrosine kinase (BTK), a deficiency of which leads to X-linked agammaglobulinemia, plays a central role in B cell antigen receptor signaling. Owing to the exclusivity of this enzyme in B cells, the acronym could represent B cell tyrosine kinase. BTK is activated by the Lyn and SYK protein kinases following activation of the B cell receptor.

This antibody has a narrowly defined specificity in its interactions with polysaccharides, being unable to bind poly-alpha(2----9)NeuNAc or alternating poly-alpha(2----8)alpha(2----9)NeuNAc.

The serum of a patient suffering from thrombocytopenia associated with Waldenström's macroglobulinemia was found to contain an IgM paraprotein with unusual characteristics. Following isolation of this IgM paraprotein, dilutions up to 0.01 mg/ml caused immunofluorescence of thrombocytes from man, sheep, rabbit, and horse.
