Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a zoonotic disease in which dogs are the main reservoirs. Until now, the serological tests do not present satisfactory sensitivity for diagnosis of these hosts. One of the functions of extracellular vesicles (EVs) is related to immunological host response.

Herein, we report the development and characterisation of an electrochemical biosensor with a polypyrrole (Ppy)-based molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) for the serological detection of the recombinant nucleocapsid protein of SARS-CoV-2 (rN). The electrochemical biosensor utilises a Ppy-based MIP formed on a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) at the gold interface to enhance Ppy layer stability on the screen-printed electrode (SPE). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were employed for the electrochemical characterisation of screen-printed gold electrodes (SPGEs) modified with MIP or non-imprinted polymer (NIP) layers.

A perfusion-independent high-throughput method to isolate liver sinusoidal endothelial cells.

Commun Biol

January 2025

AngioRhythms in Health and Disease, European Center for Angioscience (ECAS), Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University, Mannheim, Germany.

Liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) critically regulate homeostatic liver function and liver pathogenesis. However, the isolation of LSECs remains a major technological bottleneck in studying molecular mechanisms governing LSEC functions. Current techniques to isolate LSECs, relying on perfusion-dependent liver digestion, are cumbersome with limited throughput.

Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common primary glomerulonephritis worldwide with heterogeneous histopathological phenotypes. Although IgAN with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN)-like features has been reported in children and adults, treatment strategies for this rare IgAN subtype have not been established. Here, we present the case of a 56-year-old man with no history of kidney disease who initially presented with nephrotic syndrome.

The Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) as the only lipid-associated envelope protein of the Hepatitis B virus (HBV) acts as cellular attachment and entry mediator of HBV making it the main target of neutralizing antibodies to provide HBV immunity after infection or vaccination. Despite its central role in inducing protective immunity, there is however a surprising lack of comparative studies examining different HBsAgs and their ability to detect anti-HBs antibodies. On the contrary, various time-consuming complex HBsAg production protocols have been established, which result in structurally and functionally insufficiently characterized HBsAg.
