Background: Monocyte (m)HLA-DR expression appears to be a potent marker of immunosuppression in critically ill patients. The persistence of low mHLA-DR expression is associated with an increased risk of nosocomial infections and mortality. To adapt this measurement to pediatric requirements and provide extensive 24/7 access, we have developed a whole blood no-lyse no-wash micromethod (MM) and compared it with the standardized method (SM).

Objective: We optimized the spectrophotometric micromethod for the determination of arginase activity based on the Corraliza et al. modification of Schimke's method. Arginase activity in sera from patients suffering from human African trypanosomiasis, in macrophage lysates from trypanosome-infected mice, and in purified bovine liver arginase was compared using the conventional and optimized micromethods.

A new procedure is described for the visible-range spectrophotometric analysis of glutathione (GSH) in microvolumes of blood (as low as 0.5 μL) collected by fingerstick. Samples are diluted 1 to 300 (v/v) in a stabilizing solution, followed by determination of haemoglobin concentration and by acid deproteination.

It is known from literature about antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, membrane protective and adreniregulatory properties of N-acetylethanolamines, but data concerning their participation in regulation of steroidogenesis are insufficient. In order to study the influence of a synthetic analogue of endogenous canabinoid anandamide - metanandamide - on the intensity of steroidogenesis the influence of different concentrations of the drug on the contents of 11-hydroxicorticosteroides (11-HCS) in the culture medium after incubation of adrenal tissue in rats of both sexes was investigated. The quantitative determination of 11-HCS was conducted by fluorometric micromethod.

Background: A selective and sensitive high-performance liquid chromatographic method with fluorescence detection after postcolumn reduction is described for the routine measurement of vitamin K1 in plasma samples of 100 µL of volume.
Methods: Liquid-liquid extraction was used for the sample preparation with vitamin K2 as an internal standard. For the chromatographic separation, a standard C18 column was applied.
