Two common laboratory extraction techniques were evaluated for routine use with the micro-colorimetric lipid determination method developed by Van Handel (1985) [2] and recently validated for small samples by Inouye and Lotufo (2006) [1]. With the accelerated solvent extraction method using chloroform:methanol solvent and the colorimetric lipid determination method, 28 of 30 samples had significant proportional bias (α=1%, determined using standard additions) and 1 of 30 samples had significant constant bias (α=1%, determined using Youden Blank measurements). With sonic extraction, 0 of 6 samples had significant proportional bias (α=1%) and 1 of 6 samples had significant constant bias (α=1%).

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of EDC on elastic modulus (E), MMPs activity, hydroxyproline (HYP) release and thermal denaturation temperature of demineralized dentin collagen.
Methods: Dentin beams were obtained from human molars and completely demineralized in 10 wt% H3PO4 for 18 h. The initial E and MMP activity were determined with three-point bending and microcolorimetric assay, respectively.

Dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) is the most available P form in sediments and often directly controls phytoplankton blooms in aquatic systems. In this study, a novel procedure was developed for two-dimensional (2D) measurement of DRP in sediments at a spatial resolution of 0.45 mm using the diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique with a revised high-capacity binding phase (Zr oxide gel).

A sensitive, accurate and rapid analysis of major nutrients in aquatic systems is essential for monitoring and maintaining healthy aquatic environments. In particular, monitoring ammonium (NH(4)(+)) concentrations is necessary for maintenance of many fish stocks, while accurate monitoring and regulation of ammonium, orthophosphate (PO(4)(3-)), silicate (Si(OH)(4)) and nitrate (NO(3)(-)) concentrations are required for regulating algae production. Monitoring of wastewater streams is also required for many aquaculture, municipal and industrial wastewater facilities to comply with local, state or federal water quality effluent regulations.

Background & Aims: The clinical application of liver fat quantification has increased in recent years, paralleling the epidemic increase in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The aim of this study was to perform a diagnostic evaluation of spectroscopy by comparing its measurement of total lipid content with that from liver biopsies and morphometry in normal subjects and patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
Methods: Patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis underwent 3T MR cholangiography with spectroscopic quantification of TLC.
