Caffeic acid (CFA) is one of the various natural antioxidants and chemoprotective agents occurring in the human diet. In addition, its metal complexes play fundamental roles in biological systems. Nevertheless, research on the properties of CFA with lanthanide metals is very scarce, and little to no chemical or biological information is known about these particular systems.

The use of synthetic nanomaterials as contrast agents, sensors, and drug delivery vehicles in biological research primarily requires effective approaches for intracellular delivery. Recently, the well-accepted microelectrophoresis technique has been reported to exhibit the ability to deliver nanomaterials, quantum dots (QDs) as an example, into live cells, but information about cell viability and intracellular fate of delivered nanomaterials is yet to be provided. Here we show that cell viability following microelectrophoresis of QDs is strongly correlated with the amount of delivered QDs, which can be finely controlled by tuning the ejection duration to maintain long-term cell survival.

In this examination, we investigated the effect of lipoic acid (LA) on the properties of biological membrane models (monolayers, bilayers, and liposomes) formed from phosphatidylcholine (PC) or phosphatidylserine (PS) using the Langmuir, microelectrophoresis, and interfacial tension methods. The Langmuir technique allowed us to calculate the π-A isotherms and determine the molecular surface areas of pure and mixed monolayers. Using mathematical equations, we established that LA and the lipids formed complexes at a 1:1 ratio.

The cationic surfactant Lauric arginate (LAE) has gained approval for utilization in meat products (limit: 200 mg/kg). However, as for other antimicrobials, its activity is reduced when applied to complex food matrices. The current study therefore aims to better understand protein-antimicrobial agent-interactions and their influence on the antimicrobial activity of (i) LAE and (ii) methylparaben against and in defined model systems (pH 6).
