Impairment of the Functional Status and Decrease in Albumin in Frail Older People After a COVID-19 Outbreak: A Descriptive Study in a Long-Term Care Facility in Chile.

Geriatrics (Basel)

December 2024

Laboratorio de Investigación en Salud de Precisión, Departamento de Procesos Diagnósticos y Evaluación, Facultad de Ciencias de la Salud, Universidad Católica de Temuco, Temuco 4780000, Chile.

Frailty is a common condition among older individuals and is associated with increased vulnerability to adverse health outcomes. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted the impact of viral infections on frail populations. The present work aimed to determine frailty, functional and cognitive status, and clinical analysis of older persons in a long-term care facility in Chile, before and following the outbreak of COVID-19.

Rationale: Temporary central venous catheters are commonly used for patients who require emergency hemodialysis. In rare instances, this procedure can result in a very serious complication known as arteriovenous fistula (AVF). Although some cases of femoral arteriovenous fistula have been reported previously in the literature; however, the incidence of iliac AVF precipitated by a hemodialysis catheter is exceedingly uncommon.

Background: Calf muscle weakness is a common symptom in slowly progressive neuromuscular disorders that lead to walking problems like instability and increased walking effort. The mainstay of treatment to improve walking in this population is the provision of ankle-foot-orthoses (AFOs). Since we are not aware of an up-to-date and complete overview of the effects of AFOs used for calf muscle weakness in slowly progressive neuromuscular disorders, we reviewed the evidence for the effectiveness of AFOs to improve walking in this patient group, in order to support clinical decision-making.

Pair housing presents an alternative to individual or larger group housing systems, though the effects of different pairing ages on calf welfare are not well understood. In this study, we examined the impact of pairing age on the performance, health, and behavior of dairy calves. A total of 140 Holstein female calves (n = 70 pairs) were used, paired at 3 ages: Early (6-7 d; 48 calves), Intermediate (29-30 d; 48 calves), and Late pairing (49-50 d; 44 calves).

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with symptomatic lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) experience significant leg pain and reduced quality of life, with limited treatment options currently available.
  • Emerging research shows that regular heat therapy (HT) might enhance cardiovascular and physical function in PAD patients, but practical, unsupervised HT methods for the elderly are lacking.
  • A new portable leg HT system was developed for elderly patients, featuring safety mechanisms and tested for 12 weeks with positive results in terms of usability, safety, and improved clinical outcomes, including increased leg temperature and reduced blood pressure.
