Aim: Oral antibiotic prophylaxis (OAP) lowers rates of surgical site infection (SSI) and may aid anastomotic healing in colorectal surgery. The aim of this study was to analyse the understudied impact of OAP on SSI microbiology after colorectal surgery.

Proteinaceous wastewater contains various proteins, which can be valorized to biobased volatile fatty acids (VFAs), important substrates for the synthesis of biodegradable plastics, biodiesel, bioelectricity, etc., but the influence of protein type on VFAs has never been documented. It was found that among the five proteinaceous wastewater proteins investigated, ovalbumin and casein produced the most and the least VFAs, respectively.

Bioremediation of trichloroethene (TCE)-contaminated sites often leads to groundwater acidification, while nitrate-polluted sites tend to generate alkalization. TCE and nitrate often coexist at contaminated sites; however, the pH variation caused by nitrate self-alkalization and TCE self-acidification and how these processes affect nitrate reduction and reductive dichlorination, have not been studied. This study investigated the interaction between nitrate and TCE, two common groundwater co-contaminants, during bioreduction in serum bottles containing synthetic mineral salt media and microbial consortia.
