Article Synopsis
  • * The updated protocols improve upon past methods by using stabilized acrylamides for embedding and include guidelines for handling different sizes of histological samples, from small to large specimens like human bones.
  • * The technique also enhances the clearing and infiltration processes, ensuring high-quality sample preparation verified through histological staining that maintains cellular detail, mineralization data, and enzymatic activity.

A nanosecond infrared laser (NIRL) was investigated in cutting dental roots. The focus of the investigation was defining the preparation accuracy and registration of thermal effects during laser application. Ten teeth were processed in the root area using a NIRL in several horizontal, parallel incisions to achieve tooth root ablation as in an apicoectomy.

Objectives: Collagen membranes are extensively used for guided bone regeneration procedures, primarily for horizontal bone augmentation. More recently, it has been demonstrated that collagen membranes promote bone regeneration. Present study aimed at assessing if structural modifications of collagen membranes may enhance their osteoconductive capacity.

Prevalence of drifting osteons distinguishes human bone.

PLoS One

Department of Anthropology, Lehman College-CUNY, Bronx, New York, United States of America.

The histological, or microscopic, appearance of bone tissue has long been studied to identify species-specific traits. There are several known histological characteristics to discriminate animal bone from human, but currently no histological characteristic that has been consistently identified in human bone exclusive to other mammals. The drifting osteon is a rare morphotype found in human long bones and observationally is typically absent from common mammalian domesticates.

Purpose: To use histomorphometric analysis to evaluate bone reconstruction in rabbit calvaria with autogenous bone, anorganic bovine bone, undecalcified human tooth bone (UdTB), and decalcified human tooth bone (dTB) grafts.

Materials And Methods: Extracted human teeth were crushed, and tooth bone with and without decalcification was prepared. Bony defects were made in 10 rabbit calvaria and allocated to one of the following four groups: group 1, in which UdTB was grafted; group 2, in which dTB was grafted; group 3, in which anorganic bovine bone was grafted; group 4, in which autogenous bone was grafted.
