To explore the effect of lithium carbonate combined with olanzapine on glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as gender differences in treating bipolar disorder (BD). 110 BD patients admitted to the Fifth People's Hospital of Luoyang from February 2022 to January 2024 were retrospectively included in the study. Patients were categorized into two groups based on treatment: The single group (lithium carbonate, n = 50) and the coalition group (lithium carbonate + olanzapine, n=60).

Combining ion-pair strategy and percutaneous permeation enhancers to develop sustained-release paliperidone patch.

Int J Pharm

December 2024

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Shenyang Pharmaceutical University, 103 Wenhua Road, Shenyang, Liaoning 110016, China. Electronic address:

In this study, a sustained-release paliperidone (PAL) patch was developed using a combination of ion-pair strategy and percutaneous permeation enhancers (PPEs). The ion-pair strategy was used to improve drug-adhesive miscibility and control drug release. PPEs were used to break SC barrier function to facilitate drug skin permeation.

Article Synopsis
  • Hydrogel-forming microneedle array patches (HFMAPs) can deliver drugs like risperidone (RIS) transdermally while avoiding sharps waste by creating microconduits in the skin.
  • The study enhanced the solubility of RIS by using cyclodextrin derivatives, specifically hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD), which increased RIS solubility by 4.75 times.
  • In vivo experiments demonstrated that HFMAPs provided prolonged release of RIS and its metabolite, significantly maintaining higher blood levels over several days compared to traditional intramuscular delivery.

A Nanoemulgel for Nose-to-Brain delivery of Quetiapine - QbD-Enabled formulation development & in-vitro characterization.

Int J Pharm

December 2023

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, St. John's University, 8000 Utopia Parkway, Queens, NY 11439, USA. Electronic address:

Second-generation antipsychotics, quetiapine hemifumarate (QF), exhibited highly active against negative and positive signs of psychosis. However, contemporary reports have shown that long-term therapy with QF causes lethal thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. Hence, to circumvent the drawbacks of available therapies, the current work aimed to design a QF-loaded biodegradable nanoemulsion (QF-NE) with suitable surface charge modification by poloxamer-chitosan and evaluate its targeting efficiency against RPMI-2650 cell lines.
