Ghrelin suppresses water intake with a different physiological significance from atrial natriuretic peptide in conscious seawater-acclimated eels.

J Exp Biol

January 2025

Laboratory of Physiology, Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, University of Tokyo, 5-1-5, Kashiwanoha, Kashiwa, Chiba, 277-8564, Japan.

In general, ghrelin is known as one of the orexigenic hormones in mammals. On the other hand, it has been shown that ghrelin inhibits water intake, which appear to be inconsistent with its role in the feeding response. In this study, the effect of ghrelin on water intake was comprehensively addressed using conscious seawater-acclimated eels known as an experimental model for water drinking behaviour.

Mid-infrared dual-comb spectroscopy offers significant advantages by combining the high sensitivity of mid-infrared spectroscopy with the high spectral resolution and rapid acquisition of the dual-comb method. However, its effective resolution, constrained by the inherent comb line spacing, hinders its ability to resolve narrow absorption features, common in critical applications such as sub-Doppler spectroscopy, low-pressure gas analysis, and construction of the atmospheric profile. To address this challenge, we present a synchronous offset frequency tuning method for the mid-infrared dual-comb system to improve effective resolution far beyond comb line spacing.

Dendritic alterations precede age-related dysphagia and nucleus ambiguus motor neuron death.

J Physiol

January 2025

Department of Physiology & Biomedical Engineering, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA.

Motor neurons (MNs) within the nucleus ambiguus innervate the skeletal muscles of the larynx, pharynx and oesophagus, which are essential for swallow. Disordered swallow (dysphagia) is a serious problem in elderly humans, increasing the risk of aspiration, a key contributor to mortality. Despite this importance, very little is known about the pathophysiology of ageing dysphagia and the relative importance of frank muscle weakness compared to timing/activation abnormalities.

Sparse Convolution FPGA Accelerator Based on Multi-Bank Hash Selection.

Micromachines (Basel)

December 2024

Institute of Information Science, Beijing Jiaotong University, Beijing 100044, China.

Reconfigurable processor-based acceleration of deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) algorithms has emerged as a widely adopted technique, with particular attention on sparse neural network acceleration as an active research area. However, many computing devices that claim high computational power still struggle to execute neural network algorithms with optimal efficiency, low latency, and minimal power consumption. Consequently, there remains significant potential for further exploration into improving the efficiency, latency, and power consumption of neural network accelerators across diverse computational scenarios.
