Borophosphate glasses as active agents for antimicrobial hydrogels.

Int J Pharm

September 2023

Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná, Centro de Engenharias e Ciências Exatas-CECE, 85903-000, Toledo, PR, Brazil; Federal University of Technology - Paraná, Group of Polymers and Nanostructures, 85902-490, Toledo, PR, Brazil. Electronic address:

Herein we report the synthesis of transition-metal-free potassium borophosphate glasses and their application as bactericidal and bacteriostatic material. The antimicrobial activity was achieved through a simple change in the molar ratio of boron and phosphorus atoms, making borophosphate glass soluble in water. The glasses were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and water absorption.

Novel cationic amphiphiles of the 3-alkyl-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-imidazol-3-ium bromide series bearing methoxyphenyl fragments (MPI-) have been synthesized. Their aggregation properties in aqueous solutions, solubilization capacity, and hemolytic and antimicrobial activities have been investigated by a number of physicochemical methods. Using tensiometry, conductometry, and fluorescence spectroscopy, it was shown that the MPI- have lower CMCs than their nonfunctionalized counterparts.

Acid-base combination principles for preparation of anti-acne dissolving microneedles loaded with azelaic acid and matrine.

Eur J Pharm Sci

October 2021

Key Laboratory of Photochemical Conversion and Optoelectronic Materials, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100049, China; Beijing CAS Microneedle Technology Ltd, Beijing 102609, China. Electronic address:

To overcome the poor solubility, skin irritation, and low permeability of azelaic acid (AZA) existed on the marketed formulations, a co-drug principle via matrine (MAT) was adopted to prepare anti-acne dissolving microneedles (DMNs). The formula was optimized according to the solubility and antibacterial activity of novel ionic salt. The results indicated solubilization of AZA could be achieved at a molar ratio between AZA and MAT was 1:1.

Lignin particles (LPs) have gained prominence due to their biodegradability and bioactive properties. LP production at nano and micro scale produced from organosolv lignin and the understanding of size's effect on their properties is unexplored. This work aimed to produce and characterize lignin nanoparticles and microparticles using a green synthesis process, based on ethanol-solubilized lignin and water.
