The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM, 2021) milk protein yield (MPY) prediction equation includes independent and additive effects of digestible energy intake and absorbed EAA. Our objective was to evaluate the NASEM MPY prediction and EAA use efficiency in Holstein cows in pens from commercial farms. Data collected from 12 Brazilian herds were used.

The gradual increase in the consumption of mineral nitrogen is leading to heightened levels of harmful air pollutants, particularly NO emissions from the agriculture sector. A potential solution to address the issues arising from the excessive use of urea in wheat is the substitution of conventional urea with nano urea. This study aimed to quantify the effects of nano urea, both independently and in conjunction with prilled urea, under various agroclimatic and sowing conditions in India.

Designer Organs: Ethical Genetic Modifications in the Era of Machine Perfusion.

Annu Rev Biomed Eng

January 2025

Gene therapy is a rapidly developing field, finally yielding clinical benefits. Genetic engineering of organs for transplantation may soon be an option, thanks to convergence with another breakthrough technology, ex vivo machine perfusion (EVMP). EVMP allows access to the functioning organ for genetic manipulation prior to transplant.

Highly deformable flapping membrane wings suppress the leading edge vortex in hover to perform better.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne, School of Engineering, Institute of Mechanical Engineering, Unsteady Flow Diagnostics Laboratory, Lausanne 1015, Switzerland.

Airborne insects generate a leading edge vortex when they flap their wings. This coherent vortex is a low-pressure region that enhances the lift of flapping wings compared to fixed wings. Insect wings are thin membranes strengthened by a system of veins that does not allow large wing deformations.

GDFold2: A fast and parallelizable protein folding environment with freely defined objective functions.

Protein Sci

February 2025

MOE Key Laboratory of Bioinformatics, School of Life Sciences, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

An important step of mainstream protein structure prediction is to model the 3D protein structure based on the predicted 2D inter-residue geometric information. This folding step has been integrated into a unified neural network to allow end-to-end training in state-of-the-art methods like AlphaFold2, but is separately implemented using the Rosetta folding environment in some traditional methods like trRosetta. Despite the inferiority in prediction accuracy, the conventional approach allows for the sampling of various protein conformations compatible with the predicted geometric constraints, partially capturing the dynamic information.
