Microplastics pose a serious ecological threat to agricultural soils, as they are very persistent in nature. Microplastics can enter the soil system in different ways and present different shapes and concentrations. However, little is known about how plants react to microplastics with different concentrations and shapes.

A significant concentration of pharmaceuticals has been detected within composted sewage sludge. Their uncomplete removal and lack of monitoring during composting neglects their potentially toxic effects when used as a soil organic amendment. Previously, we successfully implemented a bioaugmentation-composting system focused on toxicity and pharmaceuticals' concentration reduction.

It remains essential to investigate the differences in phytotoxic effects between conventional and biodegradable microplastics (MPs). Furthermore, the mechanisms by which biochar mitigates the toxic effects of MPs on crops and soil remain poorly understood. The results of this research indicated that, compared to control treatment (CK), the application of 2 % polyethylene (PE) alone led to a significant reduction in the fresh weight of pakchoi by 36.
