Objective: Bladder tissue models have been developed using smooth muscle cells (SMCs) on various scaffolds to mimic bladder morphology and physiology. This study investigates the effects of co-culturing fetal and adult SMCs on growth properties and protein profiles to understand cellular interactions and population kinetics.

Methods: Bladder tissue samples from 10 adult and 10 fetal New Zealand rabbits were divided into 5 groups: adult SMCs (A), fetal SMCs (F), 50%A+50%F (A+F), 75%A+25%F (3A+F), and 25%A+75%F (A+3F).

Primary cilia play a pivotal role in cellular signaling and development and disruptions in ciliary form and/or function leads to human ciliopathies. Here, we examine the role of , a key component of the intraflagellar transport-A complex, in mouse forebrain development using a null allele. Our findings reveal significant microcephaly in homozygous mutants is caused by disrupted neural progenitor proliferation and differentiation.

The Application of Resolvin D1-Loaded Gelatin Methacrylate in a Rat Periodontitis Model.

Pharmaceutics

December 2024

Department of Clinical Dentistry, Faculty of Health Sciences, UiT the Artic University of Norway, 9037 Tromsø, Norway.

To evaluate the drug release, cytocompatibility with periodontal ligament cells (PDLCs), and therapeutic efficacy of GelMA hydrogel loaded with resolvin D1 (RvD1) in treating rat periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone damage. An RvD1 complexed with GelMA was prepared, and its release kinetics and compatibility with PDLCs were assessed. Rats with induced periodontitis were treated weekly with topical applications of vehicle, GelMA, RvD1, or RvD1 complexed with GelMA for four weeks.

Evolved enzymes in the metabolism of biological poly-acids: Applications in otolaryngological biocatalysis.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Otolaryngology, The First Hospital of China Medical University, 155 Nanjing Street, Heping, Shenyang, Liaoning 110001, China. Electronic address:

This study explores evolved Hyaluronidase, Lipase, and Elastase's identification, characterization, and therapeutic potential to enhance tissue regeneration and drug delivery systems in otolaryngology. Hyaluronidase variant H5 exhibited a turnover number (k_cat) of 1500 min, a 200 % increase over wild-type (500 min), demonstrating superior hyaluronic acid degradation. Similarly, lipase variant L2 reached 1200 min (400 min wild-type), and elastase variant E3 showed a turnover of 2200 min (1000 min wild-type).

Differences in binding affinity among cell-cycle CDK and cyclin pairs.

J Mol Biol

January 2025

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of California, Santa Cruz, CA. Electronic address:

The mammalian cell cycle is coordinated by primarily four cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), which are activated by a family of cyclin proteins to phosphorylate diverse protein effectors of cell growth and division. A wealth of qualitative protein interaction studies have supported a model in which different CDKs have specific cognate cyclin partners. However, there have been few quantitative measurements of binding kinetics and affinity to support our understanding of CDK-cyclin preferences and the structural origins of those preferences.
