The advent of high-throughput omics data and the generation of new algorithms provide the biologists with the opportunity to explore living processes in the context of systems biology aiming at revealing the gene interactions, the networks underlying complex cellular functions. In this article, we discuss two methods for gene network reconstruction, WGCNA (Weighted Gene Correlation Network Analysis) developed by Steve Horvath and collaborators in 2008, and MIIC (Multivariate Information-based Inductive Causation) developed by Hervé Isambert and his team in 2017 and 2024. These two methods are complementary, WGCNA generating undirected networks in which most gene-to-gene interactions are indirect, while MIIC reveals direct interactions and some causal links.

The strong correlation between reproductive life cycle type and chromosome numbers in green plants has been a long-standing mystery in evolutionary biology. Within green plants, the derived condition of heterosporous reproduction has emerged from the ancestral condition of homospory in disparate locations on the phylogenetic tree at least 11 times, of which three lineages are extant. In all green plant lineages where heterospory has emerged, there has been a significant downsizing in chromosome numbers.

Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome and Oral Self-injury: A Systematic Review of Case Reports.

Int J Clin Pediatr Dent

December 2024

Department of Dental Research Cell, Dr D Y Patil Dental College and Hospital, Dr D Y Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune, Maharashtra, India.

Background: This systematic analysis of case reports aimed to compile available knowledge and identify trends in disorder onset, symptoms, treatment, and possible interventions across individual cases associated with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) oral self-injury.

Materials And Methods: "Lesch-Nyhan syndrome" and "oral self-mutilation" were entered as keywords in four search engines. All cases reporting the patients' demographics and documented episodes of self-mutilation, with details on treatment and management, were included.

Establishing functionally segregated dopaminergic circuits.

Trends Neurosci

January 2025

Department of Neurology, F.M. Kirby Neurobiology Center, Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA 02115, USA. Electronic address:

Despite accounting for only ~0.001% of all neurons in the human brain, midbrain dopaminergic neurons control numerous behaviors and are associated with many neuropsychiatric disorders that affect our physical and mental health. Dopaminergic neurons form various anatomically and functionally segregated pathways.
