Osteotropicity of novel bone-targeted HPMA copolymer conjugates has been demonstrated previously with bone histomorphometric analysis. The pharmacokinetics and biodistribution of this delivery system were investigated in the current study with healthy young BALB/c mice. The 125I-labeled bone-targeted and control (nontargeted) HPMA copolymers were administered intravenously to mice, and their distribution to different organs and tissues was followed using gamma counter and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).

KK/Snk mice (previously KK/San) possessing a recessive mutation (hypl) of the angiopoietin-like 3 (Angptl3) gene homozygously exhibit a marked reduction of VLDL due to the decreased Angptl3 expression. Recently, we proposed that Angptl3 is a new class of lipid metabolism modulator regulating VLDL triglyceride (TG) levels through the inhibition of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity. In this study, to elucidate the role of Angptl3 in atherogenesis, we investigated the effects of hypl mutation against hyperlipidemia and atherosclerosis in apolipoprotein E knockout (apoEKO) mice.

The effects of taurine on hepatic cholesterol metabolism were investigated in hamsters fed a high-fat diet or normal chow. Two weeks-treatment of taurine at 1% in drinking water prevented high-fat diet-induced increase in cholesterol levels of serum and liver. The decrease in serum cholesterol by taurine was due to decrease in non-HDL cholesterols.

The molecular organization of Reissner's fiber (RF), the structure of its proteins, and the permanent turnover of these proteins are all facts supporting the possibility that RF may perform multiple functions. There is evidence that CSF-soluble RF-glycoproteins may occur under physiological conditions. The present investigation was designed to investigate the probable existence within the CNS of specific binding sites for RF-glycoproteins.

Previous studies showed that weight-gaining rats had greater retention and reduced turnover of 125I-labeled tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha in the circulation compared with weight-losing animals. We therefore tested the hypothesis that protein-energy restriction with weight loss reduces the levels of soluble TNF-alpha receptor (sTNFR) and membrane TNFR (mTNFR) and the cellular expression of TNF-alpha mRNA. Twenty-six male rats weighing 200-220 g were fed a liquid formula diet for 10 days and divided equally into weight-gaining rats meeting all nutritional requirements (WG rats) and weight-losing rats with protein-energy restriction (WL rats).
