Organ Failure and Prediction of Severity in Acute Pancreatitis.

Gastroenterol Clin North Am

March 2025

Department of Gastroenterology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi 110029, India. Electronic address:

Organ failure (OF) is a sinister development in the clinical course of acute pancreatitis, and its prediction is crucial for triaging the patient. Persistent systemic inflammatory response syndrome and raised interleukin-6 levels have a good predictive accuracy. Pathophysiology involves the release of damage-associated molecular patterns as a consequence of pancreatic injury, recruitment of inflammatory cells, and the release of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines causing cytokine storm.

Clinical perspective on pluripotent stem cells derived cell therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

Adv Drug Deliv Rev

January 2025

Neurodegenerative Diseases Department, Kadimastem Ltd, Pinchas Sapir 7, Weizmann Science Park, Ness-Ziona, Israel; Department of Molecular Genetics, Weizmann Institute of Science, 76100, Rehovot, Israel.

Self-renewal capacity and potential to differentiate into almost any cell type of the human body makes pluripotent stem cells a valuable starting material for manufacturing of clinical grade cell therapies. Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by gradual loss of structure or function of neurons, often leading to neuronal death. This results in gradual decline of cognitive, motor, and physiological functions due to the degeneration of the central nervous systems.

Shaping epithelial tissues by stem cell mechanics in development and cancer.

Nat Rev Mol Cell Biol

January 2025

Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Robin Chemers Neustein Laboratory of Mammalian Cell Biology and Development, The Rockefeller University, New York, NY, USA.

Adult stem cells balance self-renewal and differentiation to build, maintain and repair tissues. The role of signalling pathways and transcriptional networks in controlling stem cell function has been extensively studied, but there is increasing appreciation that mechanical forces also have a crucial regulatory role. Mechanical forces, signalling pathways and transcriptional networks must be coordinated across diverse length and timescales to maintain tissue homeostasis and function.

2,3,7,8-tetrachlordibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) belongs to the category of persistent environmental pollutants, and gestational exposure to TCDD can lead to cognitive, memory, and motor deficits, as well as altered neuron development in rodents. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying TCDD's neurotoxicity remine unclear. Neural stem cells (NSCs) possess the capacity for self-renewal and can generate various cell types within the brain, playing fundamental roles in brain development and regeneration.

Molecular Mechanisms and Strategies for Inducing Neuronal Differentiation in Glioblastoma Cells.

Cell Reprogram

January 2025

Department of Pharmacy, Zhongshan Hospital (Xiamen), Fudan University, Xiamen, China.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a highly invasive brain tumor, and traditional treatments combining surgery with radiochemotherapy have limited effects, with tumor recurrence being almost inevitable. Given the lack of proliferative capacity in neurons, inducing terminal differentiation of GBM cells or glioma stem cells (GSCs) into neuron-like cells has emerged as a promising strategy. This approach aims to suppress their proliferation and self-renewal capabilities through differentiation.
