Pleomorphic Sarcoma, an Atypical Conjunctival Tumor.

J Craniofac Surg

September 2024

Ocular Oncology Service, Wills Eye Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA.

Sarcomas are malignant tumors of connective tissue with a mesodermal origin that, in rare occasions, is presented in conjunctiva; undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma represents <1% of orbital tumors. It is characterized by not meeting the histologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, or molecular criteria in the classification proposed by the World Health Organization. The authors present the case of an 82-year-old man, blind due to absolute glaucoma, who consulted for a conjunctival mass of a few months' evolution.

The performance of lithium metal batteries can be significantly enhanced by incorporating fluorinated ether-based electrolytes, yet the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation mechanism on lithium metal surfaces remains elusive. This study employs classical and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the decomposition mechanisms of lithium bis(fluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) in 1,2-diethoxyethane (DEE) and its fluorinated analogues, F5DEE and F2DEE, when in contact with lithium metal. Our findings indicate that F5DEE-based electrolytes favor the formation of a FSI-rich primary solvation shell around Li, while F2DEE-based electrolytes yield a solvent-rich environment.

The structural insight into the functional modulation of human anion exchanger 3.

Nat Commun

July 2024

Department of Orthopaedics, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Orthopaedic Implant, Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Anion exchanger 3 (AE3) is pivotal in regulating intracellular pH across excitable tissues, yet its structural intricacies and functional dynamics remain underexplored compared to other anion exchangers. This study unveils the structural insights into human AE3, including the cryo-electron microscopy structures for AE3 transmembrane domains (TMD) and a chimera combining AE3 N-terminal domain (NTD) with AE2 TMD (hAE32). Our analyzes reveal a substrate binding site, an NTD-TMD interlock mechanism, and a preference for an outward-facing conformation.

(1) Background: We reviewed a stem cell-derived therapeutic strategy for advanced neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) using a human embryonic stem cell-derived retinal pigment epithelium (hESC-RPE) monolayer delivered on a coated, synthetic basement membrane (BM)-the patch-and assessed the presence and distribution of hESC-RPE over 5 years following transplantation, as well as functional outcomes. (2) Methods: Two subjects with acute vision loss due to sub-macular haemorrhage in advanced nAMD received the hESC-RPE patch. Systematic immunosuppression was used peri-operatively followed by local depot immunosuppression.

Introduction And Importance: Olfactory neuroblastoma or esthesioneuroblastoma is a rare malignant tumour, that develops in the olfactory neuroepithelium and is one of the rarest tumours of the nasal cavity. Ocular manifestations are uncommon. The diagnosis is based on histology: biopsy, immunohistochemistry and ultrastructural findings.
