Evaluation of an automated assay for eosinophil-derived neurotoxin in serum.

Clin Biochem

January 2025

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, United states. Electronic address:

Introduction: Eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) is a promising biomarker for eosinophil activation during inflammatory responses. Here we evaluate the analytical performance of an automated fluorescence enzyme immunoassay for EDN in serum and explore its relationship with eosinophil counts in both healthy participants and those with eosinophilic conditions.

Materials And Methods: Paired serum samples were collected from individuals for whom a complete blood count with differential was ordered.

Electronic address:

Background: Botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT/A) is the most potent and prevalent neurotoxin known to cause botulism, and is also widely used in medical and cosmetic applications. The detection of BoNT/A is of great significance for botulism diagnosis and drug potency determination. Currently, the mouse bioassay (MBA) has long been the gold standard method but has disadvantages of ethical concerns, long testing duration, and high costs.

Botulinum neurotoxin type-A (BoNT/A), which blocks quantal acetylcholine (ACh) release at the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), has demonstrated its efficacy in the symptomatic treatment of blepharospasm. In 3.89% of patients treated for blepharospasm at Tenon Hospital, BoNT/A was no longer effective in relieving the patient's symptoms, and a partial upper myectomy of the muscle was performed.

This study aims to assess the neuroprotective effects of the methanolic extract of against oxidative stress and cell death induced by neurotoxins MPP  in SH-SY5Y cells. Briefly, the methanolic extract of decreased the cytotoxicity of MPP  in SH-SY5Y cells. Treatment with extract at a concentration of 400 µg/ml resulted in a notable decrease in cell death, particularly in MPP  -induced cells.

Electronic address:

Latest observations indicated that exposure of organic environmental neurotoxins may increase the potential risk of Alzheimer's diseases (AD). As a suspected food-derived risk factor, permethrin, composed of cis-isomer and trans-isomer, is widely used as a broad-spectrum pyrethroid insecticide in agricultural crops for the arthropod pests controlling. Thus, evaluating the impact of permethrin exposure is of great importance to human health.
