We treated six patients with the combination of anterograde distal interphalangeal joint arthrodesis and Swanson prothesis proximal interphalangeal joint arthroplasty on the same finger. The results showed both bony union and flexibility, without cases of nail deformity, wound complications, tip hypersensitivity or malalignment.

Silastic metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) arthroplasty is a recognised treatment for painful finger arthritis. There are two commonly used, albeit different, designs; the Swanson and the NeuFlex. Which design is optimal is unclear.

Trapeziometacarpal prostheses.

Hand Surg Rehabil

September 2021

Orthosud, Unité de Chirurgie de la main, 15 Avenue du Professeur Grasset, 34090 Montpellier, France.

In 1970, Jean-Yves de la Caffinière developed the first trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint prosthesis, a ball-and-socket design based on hip replacement implants. From 1970 to 1990, the first generation of cemented prostheses was developed. At that time, trapeziectomy, with tendon interposition or suspension arthroplasty, and Swanson silastic spacers remained the most widely used surgical procedures for thumb basal joint arthritis.

In some chronic musculoskeletal conditions, patients with persistent pain and disability have still achieved recovery through behavioral adaptations (readjustment) or cognitive coping (redefinition). Although the pendulum shift from physician-reported clinical indicators to patient-reported outcomes measures (PROMs) has recently focused on quantifying residual pain and disability to determine recovery (resolution), whether patients are capable of coping with any ongoing deficits and achieving other forms of recovery has not been considered. We performed a retrospective case series to assess patient-perceived recovery and outcomes after silastic implant arthroplasty for hallux rigidus.

Functional and patient-reported outcomes of the Swanson metacarpo-phalangeal arthroplasty in the rheumatoid hand.

Arch Orthop Trauma Surg

May 2017

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, New Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Little France, Edinburgh, EH16 4SU, UK.

Introduction: Replacement of the metacarpo-phalangeal joints (MCPJ) with silastic Swanson's implants can help decrease pain, stiffness and allow for improved function in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). There is a lack of patient reported outcome measure (PROM) studies assessing the efficacy of this procedure in RA. The aim of this study was to report any change in function, pain, stiffness and satisfaction following the Swanson MCPJ replacement using patient reported outcomes in a rheumatoid population.
