Nitrogen-fixing associations of fungi and bacteria have been isolated from the soil and flooring of coniferous forests. The special composition and the nitrogen-fixing activity of components in associations were determined. Pure fungal cultures did not possess the nitrogen-fixing activity. The nitrogen-fixing activity of pure bacterial cultures was always lower than that of their associatons with fungi. The possibility of existence and the specificity of species composition in the nitrogen-fixing associations of fungi and bacteria are discussed.

The use of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in agriculture is increasingly recognized as a sustainable method to boost crop yields, reduce chemical fertilizer use, and improve soil health. However, the microbial mechanisms by which inoculation with nitrogen-fixing bacteria enhance rice production remain unclear. In this study, rice seedlings were inoculated with the nitrogen-fixing bacterium R3 (Herbaspirillum) at the rhizosphere during the seedling stage in a pot experiment using paddy soil.

Rhizobia and legumes form a symbiotic relationship resulting in the formation of root structures known as nodules, where bacteria fix nitrogen. Legumes release flavonoids that are detected by the rhizobial nodulation (Nod) protein NodD, initiating the transcriptional activation of nod genes and subsequent synthesis of Nod Factors (NFs). NFs then induce various legume responses essential for this symbiosis.

Unlabelled: Recently, there has been a growing interest in the application of beneficial microorganisms to enhance crop performance.  (MSR-1) are spiral-shaped, gram-negative bacteria that exhibit magnetotaxis with the help of magnetosomes (iron oxide or iron sulphide). They have exhibited biomedical and environmental applications; however, the agricultural utilization of these strains is yet to be explored.

Enhancing nitrogen (N) fixation in rice plants can reduce N fertilizer application and contribute to sustainable rice production, particularly under low-N conditions. However, detailed microbial and metabolic characterization of N fixation in rice stems, unlike in the well-studied roots, has not been investigated. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the active N-fixing sites, their diazotroph communities, and the usability of possible carbon sources in stems compared with roots.

Flooding induces hypoxia in plant tissues, impacting various physiological and biochemical processes. This study investigates the adaptive response of the roots and nitrogen-fixing nodules of Medicago truncatula in symbiosis with Sinorhizobium meliloti under short-term hypoxia caused by flooding. Four-week-old plants were subjected to flooding for 1-4 days.
