Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework Flowers for Proteome Profiling and Biomarker Identification in Ultratrace Biofluid Samples.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Department of Anesthesiology and Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Xinhua Hospital, School of Medicine and School of Biomedical Engineering, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai 200030, People's Republic of China.

Identifying effective biomarkers has long been a persistent need for early diagnosis and targeted therapy of disease. While mass spectrometry-based label-free proteomics with trace cell has been demonstrated, deep proteomics with ultratrace human biofluid remains challenging due to low protein concentration, extremely limited patient sample volume, and substantial protein contact losses during preprocessing. Herein, we proposed and validated lanthanide metal-organic framework flowers (MOF-flowers), as effective materials, to trap and enrich protein in biofluid jointly through cation-π interaction and O-Ln coordination.

Background: Preoperative hospitalization with the purpose to obtain more effective weight loss provides intensive care for patients who have a higher body mass index (BMI) and associated diseases that involve a greater risk of peri- and postoperative complications. It is a therapeutic strategy that can make it possible to overcome obstacles related to the difficulty of adhering to obesity treatment.

Aims: To analyze the implementation of a preoperative hospitalization strategy for weight loss in patients eligible for bariatric surgery.

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze if the healthcare organization of perinatal care and availability of referral neonatal intensive care units (NICU) impacted congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) neonatal mortality in the period 2004-2020. This study analyzed the spatial distribution of neonatal deaths of live births with CDH in São Paulo State, Brazil, and its association with NICU beds' availability.

Methods: Population-based study of all live births in São Paulo State from mothers residing in the same State, from 2004 to 2020.

Interpretation of Viscoelastic Hemostatic Assays in Cardiac Surgery Patients: Importance of Clinical Context.

Anesth Analg

January 2025

From the Department of Anesthesiology, Amsterdam University Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences, Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Background: Rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) is widely used for point-of-care coagulation testing to reduce blood transfusions. Accurate interpretation of ROTEM data is crucial and requires substantial training. This study investigates the inter- and intrarater reliability of ROTEM interpretation among experts and compares their interpretations with a ROTEM-guided algorithm.

Who's Afraid of Murderous Rage? When Euthanasia Colludes with Self-Destructiveness.

Psychodyn Psychiatry

January 2025

Psychologist, Transparant Centrum GGZ, Leiden, The Netherlands.

The impact of intense countertransference affects in working with patients experiencing complex trauma can have a critical effect on decisions about euthanasia, especially when such decisions are made solely on the grounds of a psychiatric condition. These countertransference dynamics become particularly significant in the context of the rising number of euthanasia requests by psychiatric patients in the Netherlands. We contend that for a subgroup of patients with complex trauma, attachment trauma, and personality disorders, the label "treatment-resistant" may be applied prematurely and incorrectly.
