Background: Seismocardiographic signals (SCG) are chest wall vibrations induced by mechanical cardiac activities. This study investigated the morphological changes in the SCG signal due to respiration and exercise.
Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited, and SCG was acquired before and after exercise.

Seismocardiographic (SCG) signals are chest wall vibrations induced by cardiac activity and are potentially useful for cardiac monitoring and diagnosis. SCG waveform is observed to vary with respiration, but the mechanism of these changes is poorly understood as alterations in autonomic tone, lung volume, heart location and intrathoracic pressure are all varying during the respiratory cycle. Understanding SCG variability and its sources may help reduce variability and increase SCG clinical utility.

This paper presents a dual-sensor method of extracting seismocardiographic (SCG) data from moving adult subjects using chest-worn wireless MEMS accelerometers. A digital signal processing (DSP) system including a normalized least means square (NLMS) adaptive filter is designed and tested in MATLAB. Data results from 10 subjects indicate a detection rate of 98.

Background: Seismocardiography is the noninvasive measurement of cardiac vibrations transmitted to the chest wall by the heart during its movement. While most applications for seismocardiography are based on unidirectional acceleration measurement, several studies have highlighted the importance of three-dimensional measurements in cardiac vibration studies. One of the main challenges in using three-dimensional measurements in seismocardiography is the significant inter-subject variability of waveforms.
