Solid-state nanopores offer unique possibilities for biomolecule sensing; however, scalable production of sub-5 nm pores with precise diameter control remains a manufacturing challenge. In this work, we developed a scalable method to fabricate sub-5 nm nanopores in silicon (Si) nanomembranes through metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) using gold nanoparticles. Notably, we present a previously unreported self-limiting effect that enables sub-5 nm nanopore formation from both 10 and 40 nm nanoparticles in the 12 nm thick monocrystalline device layer of a silicon-on-insulator substrate.

Cell Mechanics Regulates the Dynamic Anisotropic Remodeling of Fibril Matrix at Large Scale.

Research (Wash D C)

November 2023

Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Health Sciences, School of Medical and Health Engineering and School of Pharmacy, Changzhou University, Changzhou, 213164, China.

Living tissues often have anisotropic and heterogeneous organizations, in which developmental processes are coordinated by cells and extracellular matrix modeling. Cells have the capability of modeling matrix in long distance; however, the biophysical mechanism is largely unknown. We investigated the dynamic remodeling of collagen I (COL) fibril matrix by cell contraction with designed patterns of cell clusters.

Background: This research investigated the dynamics of fee-free higher education in South Africa, analysing the interplay of socioeconomic, political, and institutional factors to elucidate the complexities surrounding its implementation and impact. Using a causal loop diagram approach (CLD), the study aims to identify key factors to effective implementation, how they interact to shape the outcome of the policy, and actionable strategies to address the challenges hindering the policy sustainability.

Method: A participatory approach was used to developing the CLD, integrating insights from an extensive literature review and stakeholder opinion.

A free association semantic task for fNIRS-based perinatal depression assessment.

Front Neurol

January 2025

National Clinical Research Center for Obstetric & Gynecologic Diseases Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Beijing, China.

Perinatal depression (PD) is a highly prevalent psychological disorder that has a detrimental effect on infant and maternal physical and mental health, but effective and objective assessment of PD is still insufficient. In recent years, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has been acknowledged as an effective non-invasive tool for clinical assessment of depression. This study proposed a free association semantic task (FAST) paradigm for fNIRS-based assessment of PD.

The interactions of nanoplastics (NPs) with natural organic matters (NOMs) dominate the environmental fate of both substances and the organic carbon cycle. Their binding and aggregation mechanisms at the molecular level remain elusive due to the high structural complexity of NOMs and aged NPs. Molecular modeling was used to understand the detailed dynamic interaction mechanism between NOMs and NPs.
